Frozen Goes to Broadway

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Frozen fans rejoice!

Olaf, Elsa, and Anna are preparing to reclaim a spot in your Frozen Heart!

On February 9th, Disney Theatrical Productions revealed Frozen will be coming to Broadway. The show is expected to start production outside of New York in 2017, and then debut on Broadway in the spring of 2018.

For those you have managed to avoid the modern Disney classic, props to you and your hard work, but I have one question, Do You Want to Build a Snowman?

The unique story of love, sisters, and adventure (all including adorable snowman) was the highest-grossing animated film of all time.

The animated story was inspired by the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale, The Snow Queen. If you are watching the film for the first time in forever (ahem), pay close attention to the character names. (Spoiler alert!)

The show is currently in translation from screen to stage. The following are important people working on the project:

Jennifer Lee: Both writer and co-director of the film, Lee is working on the stage book. Her past work includes, Wreck it Ralph (2012), Frozen (2013), and Frozen Fever (2015). Lee also received an Oscar in 2014 awarding Frozen as the Best Animated Feature Film of the Year.

The Lopez Duo: Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez are responsible for any emotional distress caused by the hit song Let It Go. The duo co-wrote the song together, and received an Oscar for Best Achievement in Music Written for a Motion Picture Original Song in 2014. The Lopezes have already written new songs especially for the stage show. Time to start your vocal runs, or just run. Your choice.

Alex Timbers: The NYC native has been asked to direct the developing show. (aka he holds the fate of Frozen in his hands) Timbers directed Rockey and Here Lies Love, and he also received a Tony nomination for directing Peter and the Starcatcher. In a Playbill biography, Timbers was quoted saying “I love Brit pop without judgment, the good and the terrible.” Therefore, he has my support.

Love is an open door when it comes to Frozen. Between merchandising, the film’s soundtrack, and public displays of love for the movie, Frozen lives on. Although it is not confirmed that she will perform on Broadway, Idina Menzel, the voice of Elsa, said “It was such a dream of mine to be in the Disney family and become an animated queen,” in an interview with Cosmopolitan. Fingers crossed everyone.
