Christopher Navarro: President of AU Vets

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Christopher Navarro is more than just a student at American University. Originally from Freemont, California, Christopher is an international studies major focusing on global security in the Middle East. He is also the president of AU Vets, a group on campus dedicated to serving veterans and dependents. Christopher was active duty in the US Navy for six years and spent three and half years as a reservist. Now transitioning to civilian life, Christopher is now helping bridge the gap between civilians and veterans around DC.

Her Campus AU: What is AU Vets?

Christopher Navarro: AU Vets provides social and professional networking opportunities for transitioning vets, dependents and supporters while being active with community service in the DC area.

HCAU: How has AU Vets helped you? What do you want to give back to AU Vets?

CN: I think AU Vets really provided me with a welcoming community as a veteran. I feel comfortable around the group because they have a common background. AU Vets is a good group of friends that you can trust. I want to provide the same support and friendship but restructure the group to be more professional while giving back to the local DC community and local vets.

HCAU: What events are AU Vets planning for the semester?

CN: We are planning on doing the Marine Corp marathon and doing some sort of physical exercise together. We have Yellow Ribbon week every semester that is a weeklong celebration with different events everyday. The club is also planning on bringing key speakers and hosting social events such as barbecues.

HCAU: What advice would you give for students at AU and for vets?

CN: I would say be a little more aware. Most students don’t have the same background or perspectives so don’t be quick to judge. Don’t assume all veterans have PTSD. I’ve realized that you really can’t assume anything about anyone because of anything such as age.
