Valentine’s Day in a Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

Most people have a love-hate relationship with Valentine’s Day… Okay, mostly hate. People in a relationship feel pressured to spend too much money on overpriced candy and single people are reminded of being #ForeverAlone. But what about the rest of us? That’s right, the ones in long distance relationships.

Let’s be honest here; LDRs suck. Especially on Valentine’s Day. We miss bae every day, but today we are surrounded by cute couples, Pandora rings, and massive Costco teddy bears.

Hopefully you’re like me and you’re lucky enough to be spending this Valentine’s weekend with your honey (yay!), but if you have to admire from afar, all hope is not lost! There are plenty of romantic ways to let them know you care.

So this one’s for the long distance collegiettes who need the Pinterest-perfect Valentine’s Day inspiration…

  1. Send them a handwritten letter!

We send texts all the time, and even though seeing their name pop up on your screen still gives you butterflies, why not spice things up? A handwritten letter is a great (and practically free) way to tell your significant other that you love them. Seeing something in your handwriting will feel much more intimate, and you can use it as an opportunity to tell them things that you maybe wouldn’t over text. Tell them what you love about them, tell them how excited you are for the day when you no longer have to do distance.

Pro tip: Spray the letter with your perfume before sending for an added personal touch

If you’re not the type to bear your soul in writing, fear not!

2. Etsy.com is your best friend

Etsy.com has cards and personalized gifts for all personalities. Whether you’re cheeky or sappy, there’s something for you. But don’t take my word for it, go check them out! You still have enough time to get a gift shipped to your SO before Valentine’s Day.

3. Send them a sweet treat!

If neither 1 nor 2 sound like something your sweetie would appreciate, food is always a great way to say “I love you” (something about ‘the way to a man’s heart being through his stomach’ and other patriarchal nonsense aside, who doesn’t love snacks!?).

A friend of mine recently told me that he was getting his boyfriend chocolate covered strawberries for Valentine’s Day. But how could this be? His boyfriend is in a different state! The answer: berries.com

This delightful website has multiple gift options and will ship delicious (and gorgeous) Valentine’s Day treats to your boo from just about anywhere.

Fun fact: They also have cake pops!

Note: This one’s on the pricier side, but if you sign up for their email, they’ll give you 15% off! (Yass coupons)

Your SO will love any of these gift ideas but take it from me, a veteran long distance girlfriend: the most important thing is to let your significant other know you’re thinking of them and that you can’t wait to see them.

It’s not always a fairytale but, at the end of the day, we know we’d rather be missing them than be with anyone else.

Happy Valentine’s Day, collegiettes <3
