Teenager is Accused of Live-Streaming Rape on Periscope

An 18-year-old woman, Marina Lonina, is accused of live-streaming the rape of her friend in February, CNN reports.

Lonina alledgedly used the app Periscope, which allows the user to live-broadcast from anywhere in the world, to video the attack on the 17-year-old girl by Raymond Gates, 29, after the three were drinking at a home in Columbus, Ohio, CNN reports. Meanwhile, she did nothing to help her friend, Yahoo! News reports.

Lonina and Gates were indicted Wednesday and are facing charges of rape, sexual battery, pandering sexually oriented material of a minor, and kidnapping, CNN reports. Conviction on all the charges could result in over 40 years in prison for the two of them.

Despite the charges, Lonina denies she did anything wrong.

“She maintains her innocence in the matter,” attorney Roger Soroka told CNN.

The report of the incident came from one of Lonina’s followers on the app, who saw the footage at called authorities, Yahoo! News reports. However, it’s undetermined how many people actually saw the broadcast, prosecutor Ron O’Brien told The Columbus Dispatch.
