School Board Wants to Ban Skinny Jeans & Students Are NOT Happy About It

Wasn’t banning clothes soooo 2006? Well, apparently not. The New Hanover County School Board in North Carolina recently proposed a ban on skinny jeans, according to CNN

The dress code, titled Policy 8520, wants to ban leggings, skinny jeans, and any other tight-fitting pants unless they are paired with a shirt or dress that covers the butt “in its entirety.” Oh boy.

Thee deputy superintendent of the schools Rick Holliday said, “We’re basically trying to stay ahead of what might be disruptive to the learning environment.” Holliday also added that this “could be anything that invites bullying, unwanted attention, or in-class distractions.”

A spokesman for the school told CNN that the proposed ban was because of “faculty suggestion.” As if proposing this ban wasn’t bad enough, the school district took to Twitter to get feedback from the students and, well, you can guess how this turned out.

Many of the other responses go along the lines of the ban being sexist because men also wear skinny jeans and are not told to cover up their behinds. There’s also the age-old argument that it is not OK to tell female students to cover up their body because it’s “distracting.”

In response, the school Tweeted back to the students promising to keep their comments in mind moving forward.

Hopefully the school follows through with their Tweet-pledge. If that’s the case, this ban most likely won’t see the light of day, and skinny jeans everywhere can be worn happily again by everyone!
