HC Wake-Up Call: Trump's Twitter Rant Against Comey, New Russia Sanctions & Barbara Bush's Deteriorating Health

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

President Trump Attacks Former FBI Director James Comey On Twitter

Comey is set to release what the Washington Post called a "damaging tell-all book," A Higher Loyalty, on Tuesday — and President Trump made it clear in a series of tweets that he's still not a fan of the former FBI director, even going as far as suggesting Comey should be imprisoned.

The tweets (see below) consist of a myriad of unproven statements, and Trump covers subjects ranging from Hillary Clinton's poll numbers to Comey supposedly throwing Attorney General Loretta Lynch "under the bus."

Comey, however, is kicking off a national tour for his book. ABC News aired his first interview since Trump fired him.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush Is In "Failing Health" & Won't Seek Further Treatment

A Bush family spokesman told the Associated Press on Sunday that despite being in "failing health," former first lady Barbara Bush will not seek additional treatment.

"Following a recent series of hospitalizations, and after consulting her family and doctors, Mrs. Bush, now age 92, has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care," spokesman Jim McGrath said in a release. He did not provide any details of Bush's health problems, though according to the Chicago Tribune, she's been treated for a thyroid condition for decades. Bush also had heart surgery in 2009 following a year-long hospitalization for a different surgery.

"It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself — thanks to her abiding faith — but for others," McGrath said. "She is surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving."

The White House Is Imposing New Sanctions Against Russia Over Support For Syria

The Trump administration is taking further action following a recent suspected chemical attack that killed dozens in the Syrian town of Douma. After launching more than 100 missiles against facilitates believed to be linked to Syria's chemical weapons on Friday night, UN Ambassador Nikki Haley announced on Sunday that the administration will impose new sanctions against Russia "to punish it for enabling the Syrian government's use of chemical weapons" on Monday.

According to The New York Times, the sanctions "are meant to signal that the United States holds responsible not just the Damascus government of President Bashar al-Assad but also his patrons in Russia and Iran."

"[The sanctions] will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons use," Haley said on CBS' Face the Nation. "And so I think everyone is going to feel it at this point. I think everyone knows that we sent a strong message and our hope is that they listen to it."
