Family Guy: Is There Ever a Place for Humor Regarding 9/11?

Family Guy can always be counted on to put forth a provocative point of view, but has creator Seth MacFarlane taken it too far by making light of 9/11?

In this Sunday’s episode, Brian and Stewie go back in time and intervene to avert the terrorist attacks. When a subsequent civil war and the secession of southern states follows the attacks that didn’t happen, the two are forced to decide whether or not 9/11 should be allowed to occur. The duo makes sure that the attacks take place in order to prevent apocalyptic repercussions in a world where 9/11 never took place.

The show often references 9/11 in a satirical manner, but this episode is sure to create a controversy regarding just how far the writing team is willing to go in order to secure laughs (and ratings). Of course, the bigger issue is whether or not 9/11 should ever be susceptible to humor.

Interestingly enough, MacFarlane was supposed to be a passenger on one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center on 9/11, but never boarded the flight because of a hangover.

What do you think, collegietes™? Has Family Guy taken it too far this time?
