DIY Halloween Treats
Here are some easy recipes for crazy yummy treats. These are sweet alternatives to candy, and they’re lots of fun to prepare with friends!

Almost Candy Apples
Ingredients:

  • caramel topping (Smuckers makes a good one)
  • chocolate chips
  • sliced apples
  • chopped hazelnuts (roasted)

calories in 10 apple slices = 50
calories 1 tbsp. caramel topping = 70
calories 1 tbsp. chocolate = 90
calories 1 oz. hazelnuts = 170
It isn’t Halloween without candy apples, but prepping and setting whole ones in your dorm kitchen tends to get a little complicated (trust me, I’ve tried). Here’s an easy alternative. Refrigerate your apple slices while you’re prepping the other ingredients. Microwave your chocolate chips and stir until smooth. Next, microwave your caramel topping until soft (if you can drizzle it with a spoon, it’s done). Set the chopped hazelnuts in a separate bowl alongside the chocolate, caramel, and apples, and enjoy dipping the night away!

Caramel Puffs
Ingredients:

  • caramel topping (again, Smuckers is the best choice)
  • large marshmallows
  • pretzel sticks
  • parchment
  • baking sheet
  • cooking oil (just enough to oil the baking sheet)
  • chocolate chips

calories in 1 marshmallow = about 60
Cover the baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly oil. Set the sheet aside. Crush the pretzel sticks until you have small pieces about 2 cm in length. Microwave the caramel topping until soft and dip individual marshmallows into the topping. Coat the marshmallows with the crushed pretzels and set each one on the oiled parchment baking sheet. Microwave the chocolate chips until the consistency is that of molasses. Drizzle some chocolate onto the marshmallows, and voila! These are cute to serve to party guests and are easy to pop into your mouth.

Vampire Blood Tomato Soup Shooters
Ingredients:

  • tomato soup (Campbell’s is my personal favorite)
  • salt
  • pepper
  • soup pot
  • test tube shooters

calories in one 3 oz. shot = about 67.5
Looking for something a little more savory than sweet? Tomato soup is a classic savory fall food! Just heat up a can of soup in a pot on the stove according to the directions, add salt and pepper to your liking, and let it cool until it’s room temperature. The shooters are also great cold! The neat twist is that you can serve these is test tube shot glasses, available for purchase at Urban Outfitters.

Cheesy POPcorn
Ingredients:

  • 2 3.5-oz bags of unsalted, unbuttered microwave popcorn
  • 3 tbsp. melted butter
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

calories per cup of popcorn = about 150
Pop the popcorn and pour into a large bowl. While the popcorn is still hot, drizzle the butter over the popcorn and mix it so that all of the kernels are covered. Sprinkle the parmesan cheese over the hot corn and make sure it’s evenly distributed. Let it cool, and dig in!

Spice Up Your Cups
Ingredients:

  • black and orange sanding sugar
  • cinnamon
  • salt (optional)

Depending on the type of drinks you are serving, you can mix and match these festive ingredients! Wet the rims of your cups or glasses with water and roll them in combinations of black and orange sugars, salts, and spices. Cinnamon and sugar tastes great if you are serving iced tea, and sugar and salt works best for alcoholic drinks. It’s a cute, decorative way to spice up your drinking cups!

S’Mores at the Door
Ingredients:

  • 1 box graham crackers
  • 1 bag marshmallows
  • 4 bars milk chocolate
  • Halloween cookie cutters
  • microwave-safe plate

calories per s’more = about 136
Try this fun twist on a classic collegiette™ treat, the s’more! Lay graham crackers in a single layer on the microwave-safe plate and microwave them for about 30 seconds to one minute, or until soft. Using the cookie cutters, cut the crackers into your favorite Halloween shapes. The shapes shouldn’t be too detailed, so stick to the basics: pumpkins, cats, witch hats, and ghosts are all great options! Use your microwave, toaster, or oven to build classic s’mores with the marshmallows, chocolate, and your Halloween-shaped graham crackers! If your school has an outdoor fire pit, find roasting sticks for marshmallows and rally up some friends for a s’more making party!

Don’t let the calories get you down this Halloween, collegiettes™! With these bite-sized candies and homemade munchies, your tricks and treats can’t go wrong.
