Meghan Markle Was Written Out of ‘Suits’ Long Before She Got Engaged to Prince Harry

Before Meghan Markle became known as Prince Harry’s girlfriend (and now his fiancée), most people recognized her as Rachel Zane from USA’s hit show Suits. Meghan has been a series regular on the show since it began in 2011, and while many saw her relationship with Prince Harry as the perfect fairytale romance, Suits creator Aaron Korsh knew the relationship would factor into the future of his show.

According to Us Weekly, Korsh realized that if Meghan became a part of the royal family, she would no longer be able to play Rachel. So, being equal parts shrewd creator and courteous gentleman, Korsh decided not to intrude in Meghan’s personal life—he instead made the executive decision to write her character out of the show a year before she and Prince Harry got engaged!

Korsh told the BBC, “What we decided to do [was to] say, ‘Look, I would rather have good things happen to Meghan in her life,’ which would likely mean her leaving the show. So let’s plan on that and it’s much easier to undo that, if it came to it, than to just plan on her staying forever and then finding out she’s going to go.”

And (spoiler alert), in a funny example of art imitating life, Meghan’s character may marry her onscreen boyfriend before exiting the seventh season of Suits. In all honesty, Korsh’s decision is brilliant, as it provides a fitting end to Rachel’s storyline and the perfect beginning to Meghan’s life as a royal
