This hip hop dance group is changing the world’s perception of Muslim women in the most epic way possible.
The three dancers known as “We’re Muslim, Don’t Panic” are breaking stereotypes by busting moves. They perform incredibly synchronized routines while rocking their niqabs.
The founder of of the group Amirah Sackett wanted to flip the switch on what society thinks of Muslim women. She created the group to use dance as a way to challenge the stereotypes that other people held against her.
“I wanted to educate others and reflect the beauty that I know and love in Muslim women,” she says.
This awesome trio proves that wearing a niqab, hijab or another headscarf can be an empowering expression of faith, not a symbol of oppression. Of course, this isn’t to ignore the oppression that women of Muslin faith—and otherwise—do experience.
“Yes, there are oppressed women in the Muslim world,” Sackett says. “Women are oppressed the world over. These are our mutual struggles.”
