How to Stay Classy and Keep Your Chin Held High: Life Lessons from Elizabeth Edwards

When I learned of Elizabeth Edwards’ death this past Tuesday, I was obviously saddened, but also inspired by the remarkable life she led. And while Elizabeth Edwards will certainly be missed, she leaves behind a legacy of lessons we can use for decades to come.

1.     Stay Honest Without Airing Your Dirty Laundry

Senator John Edwards horrified the nation when he cheated on Elizabeth and fathered his mistresses’ child. But despite the public humiliation and constant media attention, Elizabeth answered questions truthfully without being spiteful.  She admitted to being angry with John (duh!), but never disclosed personal details or played the victim card.

2.     You Can Be Positive And Still Face Reality

When Elizabeth Edwards learned her cancer was terminal in 2007, she didn’t pretend she wasn’t going to die. But instead of belaboring her tragic fate, she focused on making the most out of the time she had left on earth.

3.     Women Really Can Have It All

Her husband’s political aspirations may have made Elizabeth Edwards famous, but being a wife and mother weren’t her only jobs. Elizabeth also led a successful career as a lawyer (she worked in the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office and taught at the UNC law school), owned a furniture store, and founded the Wade Edwards Foundation, in honor of her son, Wade, who died in a car crash in 1996.
