Name: Heather Askinosie
Age: 45
Job Title: Owner and creator, Energy Muse Jewelry
Website: energymuse.com

Her Campus: What does your current job entail?
Heather Askinosie: My job blends business and creativity: I design the energy products for Energy Muse Jewelry, conduct stone readings for celebrities and clients, and oversee all visual aspects of the Energy Muse brand including design of collateral, website, social media campaigns, charity, and celebrity collaborations.

HC: Is there such a thing as a typical day?
HA:
A day can vary from an Indian shaman coming into the showroom to give a blessing to an upcoming music artist needing a reading to help strategize on his/her career, to suggesting meditation techniques and jewelry to help assist someone to better health and recovery. In the midst of this economy, financial decisions need to be made, and projections for future designs correspond with what people are going through at this time (financial concerns, insomnia, fear, depression, hope, religious beliefs etc.)

HC: What was your first entry-level job in your field in how did you get it?
HA:
I was studying message and energy techniques with medicine people and crystal healers.  One of the women I studied with just came up with a massage called La Stone Therapy.  After being one of the first people trained, I went to Burke Williams to get a job with the new message I learned.  They told me at the time that nobody would be interested in this treatment — that it was too out there. I went to a chiropractor I knew who owned a healing center and he hired me. I started practicing the La Stone Therapy treatment, and eventually I started working with athletes and built an amazing client list. Eighteen years later, Burke Williams does this treatment, and it’s one of the most requested treatments not only there, but around the world. It’s now called the hot rock message.

HC: What is one thing you wish you knew about your industry when you first started out that you know now?
HA:
It’s not the goal that matters, but the journey on how you get to the goal that matters.

HC: Who is the one person who changed your professional life for the better?
HA:
My mom. She looked at me one day and said, “You’re starving with a loaf of bread in your hands. Take all your knowledge and do something with it.” After I heard this, I knew I needed to move forward.

HC: What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?
HA:
“The best is yet to come.” — Frank Sinatra

HC: What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?
HA:
Taking things for granted. I have learned to be grateful for everything. The more I appreciate life, the more life sends me things to appreciate.

HC: What is the best part of your job?
HA:
Being able to be creative, work with my best friend, have fun, and laugh.

HC: What do you look for when considering hiring someone?
HA:
Individuality, honesty, loyalty, integrity, and vision.

HC: What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?
HA:
Be true to your vision. Get out of the ego because it’s a big waste of time. Travel, be open and try not to judge — it’s limiting. Make sure what you do feeds your soul and makes you happy.
