I’m a jeans and t-shirt girl (on a good day), and so New York Fashion Week has always been conflicting. On the one hand, I drool at the intricacy of fancy lace evening gowns and chunky oversized knits; on the other hand, I’m definitely not cool enough to, as Tim Gunn would say, make it work.
But this year, inspired by the latest issue of Vogue and most recent episode of Rachel Zoe, I decided to have my fashion moment. I put on my skinniest jeans, tucked in a shirt (that’s cool now, right?), threw on a leather jacket and scarf, and hailed a cab to Fashion’s Night Out.
The evening is a spectacle even for New York: hundreds of stores–from charming boutiques to Bloomingdales and Barneys–stay open late, serve free food, and stock their stores with the seasons best buys (and celebs).
Although I was skeptical at first, I have to admit that even an hour at Bergdorf Goodman was well worth the cab fare. Besides the incredible window displays that the iconic store is known for–think live shows, performance art, and painters tattooing manequins, all impeccably dressed–the people-watching was the best the city has to offer. From old ladies in stockings and minidresses to men in feathers and blue lipstick, I was too busy gawking at New Yorkers to notice appearances from A-listers like Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Victoria Beckham, and Nicole Richie.
Although I’ve retreated to my jeans and oversized OSU shirt (go bucks!), I have to admit that it was fun to bump shoulders with New York City’s coolest. Even for just one night out.
