Best Twitter Accounts to Follow for Your Career in 2012

New Year’s Eve is a time to both celebrate the past year and decide how to make the next one even better. While some collegiettes™ make New Year’s resolutions about losing weight or getting good grades, others of us use the new year as an incentive to find a (new) job. But where are you supposed to start the search?  Collegiettes™, it’s as easy as logging onto Twitter and following a few new accounts. That’s right, one of your favorite social networking websites is officially your new BFF for job-hunting. With millions of Twitter accounts, which ones should you follow this year in order to uphold your resolution? Don’t fret, we’re here to help!

Job Search
First and foremost, you need to know where to find job listings. Thanks to Twitter’s essentially instantaneous feed, you’ll be one of the first people to hear about job openings.

  • @JobsDirectUSA: From marketing to retail, this Twitter account gives you the 411 about various job openings. Sounds perfect right? It gets even better: each tweet has hash tags with what industry and city the position is in. There’s only one thing to say to that: #winning.
  • @jobsyellow: Welcome to the Yellow Pages of job listings. You should definitely follow this account because they literally have job openings for every industry you can think of. Dental hygienist? Check. Pharmacist? They tweeted about it. Truck Driver? There are job openings! Get the picture?
  • @USJobOpenings:  This account literally has endless opportunities for employment. Not only does US Job Openings tweet about available jobs, but they also alert followers about upcoming job events. What could be better?
  • @bestjobsonline: Best Jobs tweets all the time to ensure that their followers get the latest information. You can even use this account to find an internship. While jobs are crucial for seniors, undergraduates also need to find their internships. As a result, we are all happy and finding just what we need!
  • @TweetMyJobs: Although this seems obvious, Tweet My Jobs is a must-follow. According to their feed, Tweet My Jobs tweeted about over 40,000 jobs in a single day. That’s impressive. Tweet My Jobs even tweets inspirational sayings for when the going gets tough. How nice of them!

Career-Specific Tweets
Does sifting through numerous tweets to find the perfect job seem a little tedious? Some Twitter accounts are geared towards specific careers or industries. Not only will these accounts give you just what you’re looking for, but you might also get some exclusive insight into your dream job! While we can’t give you every career specialized Twitter account, here are a few that you may want to follow.

  • @Sciencejobs_usa: Finding a stellar scientific job is no easy feat. However, Science Jobs USA is your all-access pass to finding a science job that’s perfect for you. This account even hash tags the specific industry with every job opening. Perfection!
  • @Ed2010News: If you’ve ever dreamed of having a glamorous job at an amazing magazine, Ed2010 is here to help! Though the website is known for helping hopefuls hear about internships, Ed2010 also tweets about job openings. When you follow Ed2010 on Twitter, a Devil Wears Prada-esque life—think Andrea’s enthusiasm, not Emily’s resentment—isn’t too far away.
  • @DesignJobsLive: Is the design industry calling your name? When you follow Design Jobs Live’s Twitter account, you’ll be updated on the latest freelance and contractor positions for various design companies.
  • @insider_jobs: Are you interested in social marketing, (a.k.a. social media plus marketing)? The Business Insider Jobs’ Twitter is the go-to account if you’re looking to snag a sweet internship or job in this industry.
  • @blogging4jobs: Jessica Merrell, the creator of Blogging 4 Jobs tweets hysterically honest articles and anecdotes about the Human Resources, Business, and Human Capital Management industries.  Thanks to her, you can see what having one of these jobs is really like. In addition, Merrell keeps her Twitter comical with funny occurrences that are definitely worth retweeting.

Learning About the Job Market
Reading about the less-than-stellar job market and employment trends is just as important as looking through job listings. How can you search for the perfect job when you know nothing about the country’s employment rate? Being well versed in the job market will leave you informed and ready to take on the workforce.

  • @JobsWSJ: This account doesn’t post job offerings; however, the Wall Street Journal’s Job News is definitely a Twitter do. Not only will they supply you with employment reports, but they also tweet about companies to work for and companies to avoid. That will save you a lot of time and energy!
  • @careerdiva: Eve Tachmicioglu, a MSNBC.com columnist and career blogger, created this Twitter account to give her followers the latest on employment trends. The best part about Tachmicioglu’s Twitter account is that she tweets about issues pertaining to women in the workforce. As future career women, we need to be informed about problems like the glass ceiling.
  • @AskAManager: Before Alison Green started her blog and her matching Twitter account, she used to be a manager in the corporate world. Now, Green uses her Twitter account to answer job seekers and employee’s questions. Even when you snag the job, don’t unfollow her: she could be very handy when dealing with office drama.

  • @ResumeBear: Without a doubt, ResumeBear is one of the most important accounts to follow. Not only does ResumeBear provide resume tips, but they also tweet about blog posts that you must read. This account even tweets tips and tricks for college graduates. It’s like they’re reading your mind!

Twitter is such a fabulous tool when used properly. Regardless of how many privacy settings you put on your account, people can see what you tweet. You should definitely think twice before tweeting about your annoying boss because potential employers might see it! As long as you keep your tweets classy and professional, you’re on your way to Twitter success!
Tweet away, collegiettes™!
