Here’s How to Get a Lip Piercing Without the Commitment

Lip piercings. They are sure to make a bold statement, and help you achieve that edgy-girl look you’ve always secretly aspired to. There’s only one problem: these piercings are permanent, might give your mother a heart attack, and are sure to be painful (but what do I know? I welled up a bit when I got my ears pieced).

It’s completely understandable to want to try the trend… in a far more temporary way. Welcome the latest trend in the ever-growing world of unique, creative beauty: faux lip rings, achieved with the magic of makeup. The trend of faux lip rings started with Kim Kardashian West (seriously, what major trend hasn’t been started by a Kardashian lately?) when she was first spotted early this year with a mysterious new piercing. While the ring itself is fake, the edginess it added to Kim’s signature look is real. Could North and Saint have a cooler mom?!

As for me, a couple of years ago, I purchased a fake septum ring. As cute as it was, I couldn’t get over the strange sensation of having something foreign in my nose; and I was constantly worried about the possibility of it falling out, since it wasn’t actually pierced into me. I can imagine that a faux lip ring might create a similar feeling. Thanks to these adorable makeup lip rings, you’ll get the same look, but without the somewhat unsettling feeling of the metal ring on your face.

The best part is that you don’t need to be a makeup pro to achieve this surprisingly simple look. First, apply any lipstick that you want as a base. Once it has dried, simply use a metallic lipstick or pencil to draw a thin, even line vertically down the centre of your lower lip.

Try these metallic lipsticks that are perfect for creating this edgy look:

Kevin Aucoin The Molten Lip Color in Gold ($30 at Beautylish)

Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick in Conspiracy ($18 at Sephora)

Metallic Velventines in Mercury ($20 at Lime Crime)

Wicked Lippies in Stone Cold ($6 at NYX)

Would you try this new cool-girl look? Not only will it spice up your beauty routine, but, from a distance, it’s sure trick your mother into thinking that you got the real deal!
