’Tis the season for cute hats… and hat hair? While hats don’t have the best reputation when it comes to taking care of your hair, there are ways to prevent post-hat hair distress. Try these tips to avoid hat hair, every time!

1. Guard against static

So you’ve braved the cold and finally made it to your destination. You remove your hat and BAM—static for days. Static-y hair in the winter means a lack of moisture, a common problem when your hair is forced to battle the elements. Try spraying a bit of smoothing spray inside your hat (or applying serum to your locks) before putting it on to prevent static. We love this Kerastase Elixir Ultime ($56).

2. Revitalize flat hair

Hat hair’s biggest problem has probably the easiest solution. Protect your hair’s body and bounce by simply spraying hair spray at its roots. Stow a travel-size hair spray in your bag to freshen up post-hat! We suggest ALTERNA Caviar Anti-Aging Working Hair Spray which comes in a convenient 1.5 ounce bottle ($8). You can also try your favorite dry shampoo!

3. Put it up—kindly

Sometimes the best solution for hat hair is to just put it up. But before you twist your locks into a knotty, messy bun, try tying your hair back gently, with hair ties like these Sephora Collection Ribbon Hair Ties ($9 for 8 ribbons). They come in fun, bright colors and promise not to leave creases!

4. Embrace the mess

Hats provide an ideal opportunity to try the messy-chic look. Rather than fight the static, just go with it! A salt spray like Bumble and bumble Surf Spray ($26) creates perfectly imperfect tousled tresses—the hat hair will just add to the naturally beautiful look!

With these tips, you’ll be able to wear your favorite fedoras, beanies, floppy hats and more all season—while keeping your hair looking fresh and gorgeous!
