Hostel Hangover

6/7/2011

Thanks to the 2005 film Hostel, people often tend to have some misconceptions about the safety and cleanliness of staying in these low-cost lodgings. However, as an experienced hostel habitué, I can contend that most hostels are safe, in great, accessible locations, and offer a favorable meeting place for fellow travelers to convene and party together. Costing anywhere from around $14.00 to $30.00 a night, this budget-friendly option includes a comfortable, clean bed to drunkenly crash in, a kitchen to cook in or a complimentary breakfast, and usually the staffers offer lots of information about everything from the best museums to the best local clubs. Most importantly, every hostel I’ve visited (14 in 14 separate countries across Europe) has had a bar where people can get a few drinks and easily meet new foreign friends to explore your new city with.

My favorite hostel I have ever stayed in was in the Hungarian city of Budapest and I can’t imagine introducing my experience in any fashion other than with the online description of the hostel from their own website:

Weighing In On Gaining Weight Abroad

6/2/2011

Weight gain is one of the most common fears among collegiettes™ looking to indulge in foreign fare while simultaneously hoping to stay slender. Maybe you’re aiming to look sexy in one of those skimpy swimsuits while lying on the sun-drenched beaches of Saint Tropez. Or, perhaps, you have an itty-bitty mini dress you’ve been banking on wearing for a night of raging in Rome with dreams of finding your Casanova. Either way, undeniably so, many of us want to look our finest and fittest while globetrotting and, ladies, this is your guide to doing so.

To begin with, let’s address the issue of WHY we as Americans happen to gain weight while exploring foreign lands. Well, part of the allure of journeying to a previously undiscovered place is trying the local delicacies. For instance, when I imagine myself in Paris, I automatically begin to fantasize of how I would leisurely spend my day, living like a local, by beginning my morning at a boulangerie, a café crème in hand, noshing on a pain au chocolat. Before long, after wandering through the Louvre, or maybe perusing through vintage clothing shops in the Marais, I would sit on the Pont Des Arts and watch the sunset while my best friend and I would split a bottle of wine, a reel of camembert, and an entire baguette (no joke).

Wine-O Wanderlust

5/10/2011

In a previous article, I took the liberty of unjustly criticizing those (mainly frat boys) who, solely according to stereotypes, seemed a tad unsophisticated. I chose to focus on their preference for Natty Light rather than a refined vino as reinforcement for my assertion. However, looking back at how I developed an affinity for wine, I realized that it was, in no way, cultivated in the collegietteTM atmosphere here at Davis. Actually, my adoration for this beverage really began while I was abroad as, before my adventure, I adhered to the cliché college girl criteria, merely focused on tallying up my beer pong wins and counting down the days until the next keg crawl. So, its not a surprise that some college aged guys and girls, especially those under 21, are unaware of the awesome world of wine.

Wine plays a huge role in French food, culture, and history. Whether it’s having a glass of rosé on a summery afternoon in the Jardin de Luxembourg, pairing a fine Cabernet with a filet mignon, or sipping a Chardonnay while strolling through the vineyards of Chablis, the French see themselves as the connoisseurs of wine production.

My zest for wine came about when I decided to go for a refreshing drink with a local Parisian after a day of meandering through the Centre Pompidou (Paris’s museum of modern art).  On a warm, sunny day back in mid-September, we stumbled upon a cute, little Parisian café with tables and chairs lining the sidewalk, perfect for people watching (a classic French pastime), sipping sumptuous aperitifs, and noshing on some crudités.

Frat Bros vs. Frenchmen

4/28/2011

More concerned with the outcome of his upcoming snappa tournament than tomorrow’s calculus midterm, consistently making Jack-in-the-Box his final stop of any drunken night, and always down for bro-ing out with “the dudes” over some FIFA; yes ladies, this is our classic, American college sweetheart.

Have you ever walked into a frat party and found a group of men debating politics over a glass of Merlot? Nope. Have you ever, in fact, found any men on this campus discussing anything noteworthy over any drink besides a cheap natty light? I haven’t. The problem with most American college males is that, rather than focusing on real-life issues, these testosterone-pumped alpha males are more focused on calculating whether the savings on low-grade natty light will outweigh the optimal taste of Blue Moon (well, at least economics is somewhat on their minds). Although it may seem discouraging for some of us, fear not because there are some men out there…they just happen to be abroad.

That being said, I decided to go to Paris with the intention of thoroughly enjoying every sip of café crème, visiting the Louvre at my leisure, and consuming as much cheap wine, cheese, and baguettes that my body could handle. With self-indulgence on my mind, I didn’t really anticipate any of that Parisian romance most girls fantasize about until, one night, I finally decided to give in to one of my admirers and ended up on the most romantic date I could have ever imagined.

Boys, Bratwurst, and Beer

If you have the opportunity to go abroad, do yourself the biggest favor and take it. Why? Because if you don’t, not only will you be missing out on an opportunity to grow more politically, socially, and self aware, but also you’ll be kicking yourself for missing out on some of the craziest, most ridiculous moments you could ever imagine. You are the author of your own life-story, so make it an exciting one.  I must say my “chapter” about my trip to Oktoberfest is one for the books.
