Are You Hackable or Uncrackable?5/6/2013 |
This time of year is full of holidays, whether it’s Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or every student’s favorite holiday – The First Day of Summer Vacation. Before any of these happen, though, there’s one other holiday to celebrate - Intel’s newly-minted Password Day!
How many of you reading this use the same password your Gmail, Facebook, and YouTube accounts? My guess is the vast majority of you do. I know that I do, or I use simple variations for everything. Not exactly the safest security plan. According to Intel, the average online user has 25 different passwords to remember. The problem with changing your passwords regularly or having different ones for each account is simple: there would just be too many to remember. Right? Wrong! Intel is launching Password Day on May 7 to show everyone how simple it is to have safe, secure, and uncrackable passwords for all of your accounts that are easy to type and remember. But why should you and your friends celebrate Password Day and be advocates for online security? Read on for the 3 common scams that you absolutely want to avoid. |
LeSportac is Popping Up for the Holidays!12/17/2012 |
Shopping for the holidays in December can be stressful. Between finals, holiday events, traveling, and scheduling in some sleep, there isn't much time to plan out shopping expeditions for everyone on your gift list. Exhausted from finals and with a limited amount of time before Christmas, what’s a collegiette to do? Luckily, LeSportsac has opened up a pop-up shop just in time for the holidays! The shop is currently located on the UWS, at 248 Columbus St. (72nd St.), and features a completely different vibe than its Madison Ave. and Spring Street counterparts. Instead of blue floors and dark wood interiors, shoppers will find an airy, open space full of colorful merchandise that’s sure to brighten any day marked by stampeding crowds and long lines. Whether you're looking for a parent, sibling, bestie, significant other, or those all-too-popular Secret Santa exchanges, LeSportsac has you covered. While the LeSportsac pop-up shop will feature some of your favorites, it is also carrying items from the Disney “It’s a Small World”collaboration, as well as items from their Manoush partnership and the Artist in Residence line of LouLou and Tummie. They even have an exclusive embroidery option for the perfect personalized touch! |
Love Panties? Give Your Opinions and Receive a $100 Giftcard!8/23/2012 |
If there is one thing collegiettes need to stock up on in college, it’s underwear. An empty drawer can often be the deciding factor for laundry day (the worst), and finding the perfect pair for an outfit can often be quite a struggle. Regardless of whether you adore Hanky Panky’s or love to buy Hanes in bulk, everyone has their favorites – and their opinions. That is why Walmart is on the hunt for OU collegiettes that are willing to be interviewed and give their opinions about different types of panties! To participate, you must be able to go to a specific Walmart store and spend approximately one hour with a few other participants providing feedback about your favorite underwear. (If you love Hanes underwear, even better!) The interviews will be videotaped, and will be for the exclusive use of Walmart and its product suppliers. In exchange for your time, you will receive a $100 Walmart gift card! As budget conscious collegiettes, there’s nothing like a little extra cash to kick off a brand new school year and stock up on your favorite essentials. The two dates and locations where interviews are being held are listed below: Wed, Aug 29th: Walmart Supercenter, 6100 West Reno Avenue, Oklahoma City, OK 73127 To participate, fill out this form and you will be contacted about your one-hour time slot.

The Dell Social Innovation Challenge -- Student Innovators Win Big!6/15/2012 |
While there are arguably some pretty awesome things about college life, one of the coolest things is the network you have available at your fingertips. Whether it’s financial support from your university, mentors in the shape of professors, or the plethora of highly intelligent and motivated peers, you will rarely, if ever, find yourself in a position to really delve into what inspires you with such immense resources. This is why college is the perfect time to be an entrepreneur -- whether you’re an undergraduate student or pursuing a post-graduate degree, universities want to invest in smart, motivated people – and they’re not the only ones. On Tuesday night, I was very lucky to attend the Dell Social Innovation Awards in Austin, Texas. This was the culmination of the Dell Social Innovation Challenge, which is a challenge open to students in all fields of study with any social impact innovation (from charitable to for-profit and even blended projects) and in any phase of development (from early ideas to complete operations fully up and running). The awards ceremony itself was fantastic. It was held in the ACL Live theatre in downtown Austin and the keynote speaker was Daniel Epstein, founder of the Unreasonable Institute, an organization you should all check out. It was also great to see apl.de.ap present an award sponsored by his foundation, and also to see him perform!

The Dell Social Innovation Challenge Finalists Head to Austin!6/11/2012 |
Here at Her Campus, we love entrepreneurship and innovation, so I'm pumped to be here in Austin to cover the Dell Social Innovation Competition and awards ceremony. What is the Dell Social Innovation Competition, you ask? Dell, in conjunction with the University of Texas at Austin, hosts a competition each year for student social entrepreneurs to gain access to mentors and invaluable tools, as well as the chance to win one of many monetary prizes. A social innovation according to the competition is “an idea that significantly improves results around existing social or environmental problems”. After multiple different rounds of judging, the five finalists were chosen and flown in this past weekend for workshops, to meet with mentors, and to do a final pitch of their business plan. I was lucky enough to watch the final pitches and presentations today, and let me tell you, collegiettes -- I was blown away. Each company is aiming to improve an existing social problem, many of which I didn't even know about, and it was incredibly inspiring to hear them present. You can read about them here or watch this clip about the challenge:

Campus to Contiki: Winners Announced!4/30/2012 |
//-->
If you’re a regular reader of Her Campus, you know that one of the best things about our site is our 200 My Campus branches. These branches, founded and run by college students across the country, produce new content on a weekly basis. They provide outlets for college journalists, photographers, public relations gurus and social media mavens to gain real experience. On top of that, they host amazing events and work with national clients on innovative campus programs. They’re running more than their own magazines on campus – they’re creating communities, and that is no small feat. In the National office, we’ve been very fortunate to participate in some incredible programs, including taking Contiki tours to Europe earlier this winter. We loved every second of it, and recently decided that it’s high time we stopped keeping this experience to ourselves. That is why we are going to send two lucky Campus Correspondents on their very own Contiki trip! To our Campus Correspondents, this is our way of saying “Thank You” for their talent, ambition, and dedication to their branch as well as Her Campus. They work tirelessly day in and day out to bring their readers fresh new content and embody Her Campus in every way possible. We couldn’t do what we do without them. After almost two weeks of voting and a combined total of over 30,000 votes for our participating branches, we are thrilled to announce that the two lucky Campus Correspondents from UT Austin, Bernice Chuang and Kenyatta Giddings, are the winners of a Contiki trip of a lifetime! |
Dear Jeremy Lin....Please Take Me to Formal!4/17/2012 |
Everyone wants to have that one special night with that one special person, whether it's prom in high school or senior formal in college. Of course, finding that special person is hard, and getting them to go with you is even harder -- especially when your dream date is basketball superstar Jeremy Lin! That's why Lina Yeh, a senior at the College of William and Mary and Linsanity extraordinaire, decided to get a little creative with her proposal. Check out her video below and help spread the word about her mission! We've heard Jeremy Lin's a pretty nice guy, so here's hoping he can make it down to Williamsburg to make Lina's formal dream come true! |
Contiki Adventure Days 12 &13: A Roman Goodbye2/12/2012 |
On our last full day of the trip, we met our bus driver Pino and trip guide Angie on the bus at 9am to head over to the Colosseum! Once we got there, we met our tour guide, Pietro. Angie told us multiple time he is her FAVORITE local guide, so we were all pretty excited. Sure enough, Pietro was an adorable man in his 70’s and was basically a walking encyclopedia.
We stood outside the Colosseum while Pietro explained that there used to be 4 main entrance gates for the elites of Roman society, but 80 entrances in total. It was built in 72 ad and took 8 years to build! The name “Colloseum” came from a statue of Nero that used to stand facing the arena. The statue stood as high as the third arcade of arches of the arena and therefore it was called “Colosso”, or giant. Pietro continued his tour by explaining that there isn’t anything holding the rocks together, but instead the ancient Romans inserted metal poles between the rocks. This is the only spot in the entire Colosseum that one of these poles is visible!
After Pietro shared the different types of battles that were fought in the Colosseum and the story behind the battles (most of the gladiators were slaves), he gave us some free time to roam about. We took the opportunity to take a few snapshots and run into the souvenir shop to warm up a bit before continuing on. |
