Lose The Freshman 15: Ditch the Boring Routine and Get Some Fun Cardio In

Hi guys,

Today is Monday. Do you know what that means? It means its weigh in time. So last week I told you that I had gained a pound. This week I’m happy to say I’m back on track at 162.0 pounds. That means I’m 4.5 pounds lighter than I started (I started at 166.5 lbs). That might not sound like a lot to you but it is to me. Working my way down to 151.5 pounds is just a stepping stone on my way to getting down to 120 pounds, my dream weight. I have 5 weeks to go and 11 pounds.

In order to lose those 11 pounds in the next 5 weeks, I have been exercising more. That does NOT have to mean trudging to the gym and hating every second of your thirty minutes on the treadmill. The only way to make sure you’re going to keep exercising regularly, unless you have an iron will, is to enjoy yourself while you do it. I have recently started watching television while on the treadmill. I just crank the treadmill up to what I want to run and watch my episode, which is fun for me. The shows that I normally watch are an hour long so I’m stuck doing cardio for an hour which tends to fly by while watching tv. If your gym is like mine and makes you sign up for a cardio machine and only has a 30 minute limit, do what I do. Sign up for one machine and then the one next to it for the next half an hour.

Cardio doesn’t just have to be running on the treadmill, using the elliptical, or, heaven forbid, the STAIRCLIMBER!!! It can be as simple as going for a hike.

Yesterday, I, along with some of the other residents of my residence hall, went on a hike to Buttermilk Park. I was able to stand next to the bottom of an absolutely beautiful waterfall. We then went on to climb a rather large mountain. I definitely got in a leg workout yesterday. On the way down, my friend and I realized that we had taken the harder way up by accident. So not cool.

Another way to have fun and burn calories is to play with a kid. Children are the most hyper beings on the earth. They just keep going and going like the energizer bunny. The other day I was lucky enough to play a silly little ball game with the son of my faculty in residence. The boy threw the ball and it was my job to sprint after it. This might not seem very exhausting but after half an hour of playing this game, I was ready to take a nap. Eventually I was able to do this after his parents took him to dinner.

Other ways to lose weight while having fun:
Have a dance party in your room. Pump up the tunes and dance around for a bit. If you’re feeling a bit crazy, do it in your underwear. Power to you girlfriend :)
Clean your room. If you’re like me and your room tends to get really messy really quickly, clean your room once a week and burn some calories by squatting and lunging all over the place while you listen to music. (Yes, I realize this isn’t actually fun but you should probably clean anyways)
Get some ;) cause getting some burns calories too.
Wii Sports
Weeding your garden, if you find that fun for some weird reason
Take your dog out for a long walk with some jogging periodically
Play a ball game, baseball, american football, footbal, tennis, basketball (yuck), golf
Go ice skating. I figure skate and I LOVE it. It’s such a great way to burn calories and hang out with your friends, or boo if you have one.
Spend time in the water. Go surfing, kayaking, swimming, diving, all of these burn calories and keep you cool
Credit for some of these goes to SELF Mag, you know that awesome site that gives us the Drop10 Diet

Don’t forget to rehydrate with some ZICO afterwards.

Next time I think I’m gonna do my blog on diet fads so if you guys know any super crazy diets leave me a comment and I’ll add you to the blog… aka please write a comment or else I’ll feel really sad and awkward. Yay!

Loads and loads of love,
Danielle
