How A DNA Test Helped Me Learn About My Mental Health

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

ICYMI, I recently took a DNA test to learn about my mental health. The Genomind® Mental Health Map™ empowers you to learn more about your personal predispositions, AKA what behaviors and lifestyle habits you may be more susceptible to based on your genetics. The process was simple, efficient, and super informative. And now you can use the code “College25” for 25% off.

When I viewed my report from the Genomind® Mental Health Map™, I was shocked at how accurate some of the results were, especially in the areas of stress response, sleep, and eating. Luckily, as part of the process, I was able to consult with a Genomind® BrainTrust™ Advisor about the results. Here are some highlights.

As a night owl who can easily stay up until the wee hours of the morning, I was shocked to learn that my genetic test showed I’m actually predisposed to being an early bird. Did I really go against my body all those years in college by pulling all-nighters? During my consultation, I learned that sometimes, we may be predisposed to a particular behavior but our environment leads us down a different path altogether. That was 100% the case with me: a tried-and-true night owl who is actually predisposed to wake up early. Seriously, who knew.

I was also surprised that my DNA sample revealed how I tend to skip breakfast! TBH, it’s 100% accurate (not the greatest habit, I know — we’re working on it!). I couldn’t believe a simple cheek swab revealed such a specific piece of information about my daily routine. I was not surprised to learn, however, that I have a sweet tooth. Let’s be real, chocolate chip cookies are everything.

As someone who lived in a constant state of stress for many years (hello, high school and college), I was interested to see that I tend to have a slightly heightened stress response and a predisposition to worry. During my consultation with a Genomind® BrainTrust™ Advisor, I received personalized recommendations for this aspect of my health, like exercising more often and even incorporating more magnesium into my diet.

If you’re interested in learning more about your mental and physical health, Genomind® is a great place to start. After receiving my kit, I had results within weeks, and the 30-minute virtual consultation was *everything* in helping me understand my unique blueprint. The whole experience was super informative, and the best part is, Genomind® is offering 25% off orders right now. Use the code “College25” to learn more about the process, and start feeling empowered about your mental health and wellness.
