Wish as we may, our own lip-locking endeavors might never rival those of Hollywood. But while we’re waiting for our perfect kiss, let’s review ten of the best movie smooches.

The Kiss in the Rain: Allie and Noah in The Notebook

What does angry passion, sexual tension, 365 unanswered letters and a completely sudden and unrealistic downpour make for? One of Hollywood’s most iconic kissing scenes of the past decade, of course. Though The Notebookhas plenty of other sweet smooches, nothing can top the raw desire that had Allie and Noah working their way to the bedroom for the hanky panky they (and we) had been waiting for the entire movie. The Upside Down Kiss: Peter and Mary Jane in Spiderman

After years of watching countless rom coms, we know by now there’s no better way to thank your love interest than with a kiss. Up the ante with some superhero powers, and you get the topsy turvy Spiderman embrace that had viewers swooning — and secretly practicing in an attempt to figure out the logistics of the kiss. The idea has been replicated time and time again. While The O.C.’s nerd-tastic version came pretty close to perfect, the Spidey powers of the original just can’t be beat. (Watch it here!)

The “I’m Flying” Kiss: Rose and Jack in Titanic

Like many movie kisses, Rose and Jack’s first kiss on the bow of the Titanic had a trifecta of romantic things going for it. After all, how could a Celine Dion backtrack, a vibrant sunset and feelings of euphoric, impractical qualities not lead to big screen magic? It’s the stuff that mushy, feel-good dreams are made of. We’ll be forever indebted to the movie and this kiss for giving us the sense that nothing can stop two people in love. (Watch it here!)

The Kiss on the Lips: Edward and Vivian in Pretty Woman

A prostitute wooed by a rich client is enough cause for cinematic fireworks. But, a prostitute who breaks all her rules to fall in love with said client? Well, that’s just pure gold. Vivian’s a lovable hooker (yes, it’s possible) who does her, ahem, job with one rule: no kissing on the lips. An hour or so and a couple skipped heartbeats later, and the tough gal finally lets down her walls enough for some lip-to-lip action. And every guarded girl finally began believing in true love. The First Kiss: Josie and Sam in Never Been Kissed

The first kiss: one of the most talked about adolescent achievements at sleepovers across America. Most girls usually dream of sealing the deal by their early teens, but the feat can sometimes take patience. A whole lot of patience in Josie’s case. At the ripe old age of 25, her sweet smooch deserved every bit of the adorable build-up and surprised audience it had. (Watch it here!)

The Undeniable Passion Kiss: John and Jane in Mr. and Mrs. Smith

When you’re not sure whether a smoldering stand-off will end with a gunshot or sex, the outcome is bound to be juicy. It’s the kind of slightly dangerous, gotta-have-it-now kisses we all hope to have once in our lives. John and Jane Smith prove that violence can beget romance as they cap off the night with a make out session destined for the record books. Who knew intense chases and attempts at homicide could be such turn-ons? (Watch it here!)

The PDA Kiss: Johnny and Baby in Dirty Dancing

Though certainly not their first kiss, Johnny and Baby’s very public display of affection confirms the depths of their forbidden love. Sound overly dramatic? We’ll admit the sappy romance was laid on a bit thick. But, really, how can you deny a kiss that follows one of the big screen’s most famous dance scenes a spot on this list? Once the two secret lovers shed their fears of being caught together, the sensual energy is impossible to miss — and even more impossible to forget. (Watch it here!)

The “Finally” Kiss: Harry and Sally in When Harry Met Sally

It’s the movie that addresses the question of whether men and women can be just friendsand the kissing scene that makes our hearts skip a beat. After a movie chock full of “will they, won’t they” questions, Harry’s declaration of love and the pair’s subsequent puckering up had every viewer let out their breath with an exclamation of “finally.” Whether or not the movie changed our opinions on the male/female friendship debate, it certainly taught our beaus the correct prelude to a kiss. (Watch it here!)

The Just Do It Kiss: Hannah and Jacob in Crazy Stupid Love

We’re obviously partial to Dirty Dancing-inspired love scenes, but it’s Hannah and Jacob’s first smooch, rather than their movie-copycat kiss, that made this list. Kissing can be nerve-wracking. Add in the fact that it’s a first kiss with an incredibly attractive, womanizing almost-stranger, and a healthy dose of confidence is more than necessary. Hannah’s major show of lady cajones is what we should all keep in mind to make our next terrifying kiss as hot as possible. (Watch it here!)

The Kiss of Death: Christian and Satine in Moulin Rouge
Christian sang that all you need is love, but even his desire-laden kiss couldn’t save Satine from her untimely death. In the (not so) classic “boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, girl dies” story line, Satine and Christian’s love affair wants not for passionate kisses. Different than many movie kisses, the tenderness of this last embrace was backed by so much emotion and true love that we needed more than a few tissues to get through the film. (Watch it here!)

The perfect kiss comes in many packages, as this list proves. Which romantic kiss tops your list? Did we leave out your favorite?
