Online Shopping Tips and Tricks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Youngstown chapter.

During this time, we haven’t been able to shop at our favorite stores in person. Because of this, many of us have turned to online shopping. When we’re shopping, we all want to get the best price available, and sometimes that can be hard to do online. Here are some tips and tricks to get your favorite products while saving money all with the click of a button!

*I will receive credit if my referral links are used*

Rakuten

Now, this is my favorite tip out of all of these. Rakuten is a cashback website. All you have to do is sign up with your email and start shopping. To earn cashback, go to their website and search for the store you want to shop at. Once you click on the store, it will show how much cashback will be offered if you make a purchase and redirect you to the store’s website. Another way you can use Rakuten instead of logging on to their website is getting the extension for your web browser. As soon as you go onto a website that offers cashback, a notification will appear on screen that says activate cashback. Make sure you click it if you are planning on making a purchase! Once you earn cashback, every 3 months they will send you your cashback. You have the option of them mailing you a check, reimbursing you through PayPal, or turning your cashback into American Express rewards points. Currently, they are running a promotion where if you use my referral link, they will give you $25 when you make any purchase through them!

Tip: Make sure you ALWAYS check Rakuten before making an online purchase! Their percent cash back fluctuates and the stores that don’t currently offer cashback may offer it in the future.

Honey

Honey is another extension on your web browser that when activated, will try all possible coupon codes that can be applied to your order. When purchasing through Honey, you can also earn Honey Gold which can be used to redeem gift cards to your favorite stores! Even if there are no possible coupon codes to apply to your order, there is always an option to earn Honey Gold. Once you earn 1,000 Honey Gold, you can redeem a $10 gift card! Currently, they are running a promotion where if you use my referral link, they will give you 500 Honey Gold which is equivalent to $5 when you make a purchase through them!

Tip: If using in conjunction with Rakuten, make sure you reactivate the cashback button as Honey will disable it while trying coupon codes!

RetailMeNot

RetailMeNot is a great app to use for in-store shopping! It provides coupons for several retailers in-store and online. RetailMeNot can also be used for cashback online but I’ve found Rakuten is better for online purchases.

Tip: RetailMeNot may not always work in-store depending on if the retailer allows it. However, it never hurts to try!

Rewards Programs

I cannot express how important it is to sign up for rewards programs for your favorite stores. Most rewards programs are free to sign up for as long as you provide an email. Some of my favorite stores that offer rewards programs are American Eagle, Abercrombie & Fitch, Ulta, Kohl’s, and Dunkin Donuts. Just by making a purchase and scanning your rewards card or providing your phone number or email associated with your rewards account, you can earn points that can be turned into coupons or free items! Some stores even offer discounts, coupons, or free items for your birthday!

Tip: Make sure you frequently check your rewards points as some stores set them to expire after a certain time period!

Resale Websites

This is by far, the best way to get discounts on items you love or even items that were out of stock when you went to purchase them. Resale websites like Poshmark, Mercari, and Curtsy allow people to sell all sorts of new and used items for up to 80% off the retail price. Eyeing a pair of Lululemon leggings that you absolutely love but are sold out on their website, check Poshmark! They probably have the largest selection of items and allow you to bundle items together that you like from the same seller. They also have a flat rate of $7.11 for shipping no matter the quantity or size of the item(s). They are currently running a promotion where if you sign up with my invite code, you will automatically get a $10 credit to use on a purchase of $10 or more! Mercari is another resale website that I have just recently started to use. I have bought several items such as brand-new Ray-Bans and a Cricut Easypress. The prices tend to be cheaper on Mercari in comparison to Poshmark (if you can find the same item) because their seller fee is lower. Shipping also tends to be cheaper depending on the item. They are currently running a promotion where if you sign up with my referral link, you will receive a $10 off coupon! Curtsy is also another resale website but it’s quite different from Poshmark and Mercari. Curtsy has its own rewards program where when you make a purchase, post an item, re-list an item, or get your first 5 star rating you earn Curtsy Coins. You can then redeem these coins for coupons. 40 coins are equivalent to $5 off any purchase, 70 coins areequivalent to $10 off any purchase, and 100 coins are equivalent to $15 off any purchase. They are currently running a promotion where if you use my invite/promo code at checkout, you will receive $10 off your order!

Tip: NEGOTIATE! Always negotiate prices with the seller. Most of the time, the seller is selling their item above what they are willing to take. It never hurts to ask!
