Why You Need to Adopt a Morning Routine ASAP

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WSU chapter.

Morning routines can be something that are extremely beneficial to your mental health, and instantly set the mood for the day.  A routine helps you accomplish more, feel productive, and wake you up on a good note. Recently,  in order to get more on track, I decided to adopt a morning routine. It has been the best decision I have ever made. Not only am I more productive I am more likely to spend my time doing things that I enjoy. Adopting a morning routine is all about using your time more efficiently. You also decrease the number of decisions that you make. Here is the morning routine that I use:

1. Drink a glass of water and eat a banana.

It is important to drink water when you wake up. Your body is immediately dehydrated when you wake up. You haven’t had anything to drink in over eight hours. I am also normally hungry when I wake up so I eat a banana when I wake up as well.

2. Stretch and go to the gym.

Depending on the day I will either go to the gym or do a seven-minute workout. This depends on my mood and how many times I have been to the gym that week.  The seven-minute workout is an app that you can download and is super fast but gets you moving. You can choose where you want to focus as well. I normally do abs!

3. Shower

Shower because that’s important. I am a girl that takes fast showers. I also don’t always wash my hair.  When I do wash my hair I use Pantene Pro-V Sheer Volume Shampoo & Conditioner. It isn’t the fanciest shampoo but definitely does the job! I also use Lush’s D’fluff shaving cream for whenever I have to shave my legs and it smells amazing!

4. I make coffee and grab a snack for the day.

Grab some coffee and a snack for later in the day. I am a snacker so I always get hungry in my classes. I try to bring something small with me. Normally this will be a granola bar or some cereal in a bag.

5. Get ready for the day

Then I will get ready and drink the coffee I have made. This is always my favorite part of the morning because I can jam to some music. I normally wear a little bit of makeup. Currently I have been using the Fenty Foundation by Rihanna. It is amazing. I also wear some mascara. I am a big fan of Clinique mascara.  After that I will do my hair! I normally just throw it into a bun!

6. Plan Day and List Goals for the Day

I will look at my planner and see what I need to do for the day. I will also write out the goals for the day. This is super important because it lets me know what I need to get done that day.

7. Answer Emails

I will also go through the emails that I have for the day. Normally this is just deleting spam emails but is important to me.

8. Walk to Class and Listen to a Podcast

This is where I listen to some of my role models and funny podcasts. Some of my favorite podcasts are Millennial, #GirlBoss, and Ted. All are about motivating me to do my best. It also good cause you even get a morning walk in!

One of my favorite quotes is from John C. Maxwell he says,  “You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine. ” I think this a good reminder to use your time efficiently and make the most of your day.

This routine is fairly simple. You can change it to match what works best for you. The most important thing is that you stick to it! I promise you it will make you feel more productive.

I am a sophomore at Washington State University. I am getting a degree in International Business and am looking forward to a career in Non-Profit work! Be sure to check out WSU's Her Campus page!
