8 DIY Beauty Hacks Every Collegiette Needs to Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

No one appreciates the convenience of a DIY beauty hack more than us collegiettes. We thrive on anything that doesn’t require us to empty our wallets or waste our precious study time running to the store. Let’s face it: we’re overworked, underslept, and always on the lookout for a good beauty hack! We truly understand the saying “desperate times call for desperate measures” better than anyone and have both the intelligence and ingenuity to create a quick fix. Here are 8 DIY beauty hacks that every girl will appreciate in the desperate times of their beauty routine!

1. DIY Brow Gel

Brow gel is a product many girls may not own, but it is a definite life saver to keep those unruly brow hairs in place all day long. Spraying a spooly brush with hairspray and running it through your brows is a quick fix without making the investment on an expensive brow gel.

2. DIY Contour Brush

Every collegiette owns a daily powder brush, but owning a contour brush is a little less common and, in some cases, not worth the splurge. For those of you still a bit nervous to make the investment on a contour brush, not to worry! Simply double your powder brush as a contour brush with the help of two bobby pins.

3. DIY Fresh Mascara

It always seems as if we JUST bought new mascara and, once again, it’s starting to dry out on us. A quick fix is to use your own body heat from under your arm/leg to warm the product and help it apply smoother and clump free. For long term results, add a few drops of contact solution or eye drops to the tube to help loosen the product and recreate that fresh mascara consistency.

4. DIY Static Smoother

The cool fall and winter weather often leaves our hair begging for moisture and clinging to every surface in a frizzy disaster. But no worries; run a dryer sheet along your hair to smooth out any pesky flyaways and tame that lion’s mane before you head out the door.

5. DIY Manicure Refresher

There is no better feeling than leaving the nail salon with fresh claws and perfect cuticles. But as the weeks pass and our nails start to grow out, we can’t help but wish there was a way to mask the nail growth. To extend the life of your manicure, add sparkles to the bottom of your nail to add an ombre effect and get the most out of your salon experience.

6.  DIY Lip Plumper

Lip plumper does wonders for achieving that Kylie Jenner pucker, but is a product people are often skeptical about due to its chemical base. Take the au natural route by adding a few drops of peppermint to a clear lip gloss. This natural remedy will add an immediate plump and enhance the appearance of your lips in the safest way possible.

7. DIY Heated Eyelash Curler

This DIY is perfect for a night out to achieve a false eyelash effect. Simply use your hairdryer to warm your eyelash curler for 10 seconds. When heated, curl your eyelashes as you regularly would. This will add volume and help the curl last much longer, but be sure that the curler is an appropriate temperature before placing it near your eye.

8. DIY Matte Lips

There is nothing more frustrating than struggling to avoid hair flying in your face and sticking to your fresh lip gloss. Try mattifying your lips without having to purchase a matte lipstick! Simply place a tissue over your lips and pat a translucent powder on top of the colour. Not only will this eliminate any shine or stickiness, but it will also help keep the colour in place for hours.

So for all you collegiettes on a budget and looking for easy yet effective beauty hacks, search no further. Who knows, maybe those desperate times will be a thing of the past once you try out these tricks! Best of luck!
