City Events: Tokyo International Film Festival

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waseda chapter.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to a film festival? Well, wonder no longer! The Tokyo International Film Festival is here with an extensive lineup of films that may just turn you into a true cinephile. While Hollywood blockbusters often dominate theaters, during film festivals such as this one, independent, and foreign films take center stage.

First launched in 1985, TIFF celebrates its 31st edition this year! The festival is held in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, and various other locations depending on the film/event. Ticket prices also vary, but are generally cheaper for students; some events even offer free entry! The festival closes on November 3rd, so be sure to check out the event while you can.

Here are a few films that may get you running to the box office:

Three Identical Strangers (2018)

As the title suggests, this documentary film tells the story of three identical strangers who meet later in life and uncover life-changing truths about their lives.

Shall We Dance? (1996)

You may have seen the American remake of this romantic comedy (starring Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez), but now you have the chance to see the original! The Japanese film, originally released in 1996, tells the heartwarming story of a middle-aged salaryman who discovers his love for ballroom dancing.

My Life As a Zucchini (2017)

This Swiss-French stop motion film might just steal your heart. Described as a “charming and thought-provoking gem”, this film is sure to tug at your heartstrings.

(500) Days of Summer (2009)

“You should know upfront, this is not a love story.” If you haven’t seen this classic movie about love and heartbreak, this is your chance! Did I mention that admission is free?

Tickets can be purchased online or at TIFF Ticket Center counters.
