College Survival Guide: Easy and Healthy Snacks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Eating healthy in college can be difficult especially when you’re running low on cash, don’t have an oven or microwave and the convenience of fast food is always there. Although fear not because I have made a quick and easy guide on how to snack healthy on a budget with only a couple of ingredients.

  1. For when you have a sweet tooth instead of having a candy bar, try having a slice of whole wheat toast with peanut butter, banana slices, honey drizzle and cinnamon. This combo will knock your sweet tooth right out and your body will be thanking you later! If you’re allergic to peanut butter replace with hazelnut spread.

  2. Replace your potato chips with dried fruit, pretzels or peanuts.

  3. Fresh fruit is your best friend! Grabbing an apple, pineapples, grapes or strawberries in replacement of processed and packaged food is always the better choice. Your body will thank you for it later! Remember to always buy in-season fruits and veggies. They’re cheaper and fresher. Avoid at all costs pre-cut fruits and veggies you’ll end up paying WAY more than if you just bought fresh fruits and veggies.

   4. Replace your juice with water. If you don’t like the taste of plain water just add a zero calorie sweetener to your water such as crystal light.

   5. Make your own trail mix to keep around for emergency snacking. Keep it simple! Nuts of your choice and something sweet like chocolate or granola.

These are just a few easy and simple tricks to snack healthy on a budget. Comment below your favorite healthy snack!
