10 Backhanded Compliments You’ve Heard as a Black Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

If you’re a Black girl, then chances are, you’ve gotten at least one of these “compliments” before. You were probably either shocked, amazed or just plain angered by what certain people consider “nice.” Whether it was from some White girl obsessed with natural hair or some White guy that’s never been with a “mocha chocolate caramel” goddess before, here’s a list of 10 backhanded compliments that some people have no idea are offensive.

1. You’re pretty for a Black girl.

2. Your hair is so long! Is it all yours?

3. Your hair would be so long and cute if it were straight!

4. Can I touch your hair? It looks so interesting!

5. You’re not (loud, ghetto or ratchet) like other Black girls!

6. I like how you actually use proper English.

7. You’re so pretty! Are you mixed?

8. I like your curls! They aren’t like, nappy, or anything!

9. Wow, I’ve never been with a Black girl, but I wouldn’t mind trying it out.

10. Wow, your hair is actually soft when you touch it! It looks so rough!
