Fair Foods 101: Texas Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTSA chapter.

It’s that time of the year again, folks.

It’s the best thing Texas has to offer and (unfortunately) only comes once a year for 24 days. If you haven’t guessed it by now, you’re probably not from Texas. But if you have, congrats – you’re a true Dallasite/Texan!

That’s right, y’all – the State Fair of Texas has finally arrived.

You can’t help but to be in awe as you take in the sweet smell of fall and Fletcher’s corny dogs filling the air at Fair Park. It’s truly a wonder, especially when you get to see Big Tex, the awesome rides at Midway, and the beautiful Cotton Bowl right smack-dab in the middle of the park.

Simply stating that I am a die-hard Dallasite is clearly an understatement. I LIVE for everything Dallas-related, and the State Fair of Texas is probably number one on my list of reasons why I love Dallas. So whether you’re returning or going to the fair for the first time, I have compiled a list of foods you MUST try when at the most wonderful place on Earth (sorry, Disney).

*disclaimer: these items are not in order of tastiness – just try them all!

1. Fletcher’s Corny Dogs. This is a must. Don’t fight me on this and don’t @ me.

2. Fernie’s Fried Texas Sheet Cake. NEW ITEM!!!

3. Fried snickers. The combination of crunchiness and gooeyness is what makes this an amazing item.

4. Fernie’s Holy Moly Carrot Cake Roly. Who doesn’t love carrot cake?

5. Loaded brisket baked potato. I mean, just reread the name…

6. Deep Fried Fruit Loops. Two words: Fried cereal.

7. Fried Oreos. Nowadays, you can get these anywhere, but I swear no one can make them taste as good as these.

8. Jumbo beef nachos. Again, you can get these anywhere, but trust me these are HUGE and come with a cute little Mexico flag! #represent

9. Fried Jell-O. It won the Best Taste category at the 2016 Big Tex Choice Awards!

10.  Foot-long hot dog. Just look at it!

11. Turkey legs… are always a must.

12. Fried cheesecake stuffed apple sundae. This is a new one, but definitely a must-try!

13.Deep fried bacon wrapped mozzarella. My two favorite foods – bacon and cheese.

14.Tornado potatoes. Potatoes are always good, but the shape of these makes it even better!

Of course, these aren’t all of the foods you should try. If you get the chance to attend, eat as much food as possible. Have fun and happy tasting!
