To Everyone Threatening to Leave the Country

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

As many of you heard, Canada’s immigration website crashed on November 8th. Supposedly, many fear-stricken Americans took to the Internet to plan their escape from a Trump-run America.

Potential movers, do you really think you can easily uproot your lives, your families, your possessions and relocate everything elsewhere? Where will the money come from to facilitate your move? What about your jobs? Other obligations? It’s nice to have dreams, but it is time to face reality. You can’t leave the country and ignore the problems that are affecting the rest of us.

If this election left you with a bad taste in your mouth, you have a right to do something about it. We are, after all, a country built on fighting for progress. Just remember that nothing ever came easy to us, but in the end we were given many of the freedoms that we are entitled too. If you have a problem with the future direction of our country, do something about it. Band together with other likeminded individuals and fight for what you believe is right. Lobby, donate, rally, do anything possible to make your voice heard.

If you do have the funds to move, consider this: instead of fleeing, take initiative. You were planning to spend money on moving anyway so why not allocate it to causes that actually matter. That money could be given to organizations that will need the most help during our new presidency. Consider organizations like Planned Parenthood, Human Rights Campaign, literally any organization that stands against our new president’s beliefs. You could also donate to likeminded political parties/ politicians who will help fight for the changes you want to see. The next four years won’t be easy, but if we all stand our ground and support what is right, we might have a chance for progress.
