MUSIC MONDAY: Melanie Lynx

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

From a small town in Rhode Island, to performing on American Idol, Melanie Lynx is a name that you will be hearing a lot of. At just the age of 20, Melanie has won over the hearts of many (including Perez Hilton!) and now she’s about to get yours too.

“I started singing when I was four years old. At first it was just a hobby. I would pretend I was a Disney princess and sing Disney songs in local talent shows. But as I got older, I started spending all of my free time focusing on practicing singing, performing and writing music,” Melanie told us. After traveling throughout New England to perform at various singing competitions, Melanie realized that she wanted to turn her hobby into her career and has been kicking butt and taking names since then (not to mention making it on to season 10 of American Idol!).

If you jam to female artists like Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and Pink, then this is your go-to gal for your next mix CD. With a pop rock genre and lyrics written by herself, plus the help of some of her friends, you can’t help but to find yourself singing along to her music.

Besides Melanie, the band also has a guitarist, bassist, drummer and keyboardist, whom she’s been friends with for over two years from their college dorm days at Berklee College of Music. They all rocked together for Melanie’s latest single “First Time”, which they just released the music video for.

Once you watch the video, you’ll be hooked. Melanie’s lyrics are relatable and listening to her songs is like taking a peek in her diary. Want to know the inspiration behind “First Time”? Well, luckily for you, we got to chat with Melanie about it. “I was feeling a really great connection with a guy I was hanging with. We’ve been good friends for a while and because I’m not a very confrontational person, I wrote this song instead of telling him how I felt. He still doesn’t know the song is about him,” Melanie explained.

Keeping in the spirit of “first times”, we asked Melanie to give us some advice on first dates. She told us, “When you’re out with someone for the first time, CONFIDENCE goes a long way. Also, it’s always best to at least try and act like a lady while you are on a first date…so mind your manners!”

Now that you’ve heard “First Time”, just wait until Melanie releases new music and goes on tour. If you catch her on tour, here’s what you can expect to find in her dressing room: “A baby grand piano, personal chef and some hot dude…Zac Efron? I’m joking. Probably just a lot of cool high-top sneakers!”

If Melanie Lynx hasn’t won you over yet, then check out her new music video below. Connect with her on Twitter, Youtube, Instagram and “like” her on Facebook to receive a free download of her song “First Time”.

*Make sure to RSVP and come out to the Her Campus launch party on Saturday, September 15 for a chance to win autographed photos and copies of “First Time”!
