I had the chance to interview the lovely crafter and student, Nahir Elaine Perez, and here’s what she had to say!

Nudo Solar: Hola, mi nombres es Nahir Elaine Perez y soy la creadora de Nudo Solar. Además, soy también estudiante graduada de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Río Piedras. Me apasiona la psicología y filosofía, hacer mosaicos (tengo otra pagina que se llama @____elenadetroya) y tejer.
Hello, my name is Nahir Elaine Perez and I am the creator of Nudo Solar. In addition, I’m also a graduate student at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras. I’m passionate about psychology and philosophy, making mosaics (I have another page called @____elenadetroya) and knitting.
HC UPR: Primero, lo más importante, ¿de dónde salió un nombre tan bello?
First, the most important thing, where did such a beautiful name come from?
NS: El nombre fue lo más difícil. Quería algo que tuviera que ver con la mitología griega porque me encanta, pero nada me convencía. Lo primero que trabajé fue el logo. Pusimos el Sol en el medio y al exterior una cadena circular de olas o espirales griegos o de la cultura antigua de Mesoamérica. Entre tanta indecisión, una noche lo miré y se me ocurrió Nudo Solar, porque esas olas o espirales también se parecen a los nudos o puntos que trabajo. Y escogí ese amarillo/dorado con blanco porque además de que representa el Sol y su luz, es mi color favorito, además de que se ve elegante.
I had the hardest time picking out the name. I wanted something that had to do with Greek mythology because I love it, but nothing really sounded good to me. The first thing I worked on was the logo. We put the sun in the middle and outside a circular chain of Greek waves or spirals or the ancient culture of Mesoamerica. Between so much indecision, one night I looked at it and I came up with Solar Knot, because those waves or spirals also resemble the knots or points, I work on. And I chose that yellow/gold with white because in addition to representing the Sun and its light, it is my favorite color, and it looks elegant.
HC UPR: ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas tejiendo?
How long have you been knitting?
NS: Aprendí a tejer justo después de que pasara el huracán María, en septiembre de 2017. Mi madre había tomado clases recientemente y me enseñó lo que sabía durante ese período. Como no teníamos mucho hilo, tenía que romper lo que iba tejiendo y volverlo a hacer para seguir practicando. Aprender a tejer durante ese contexto me sirvió como terapia para procesar todo lo que estaba pasando.
I learned to knit just after the passing of Hurricane Maria in September 2017. My mother had taken classes recently and she took the time to teach me what she knew during that period of rain. Since I didn’t have enough yarn, I had to knit, then unravel the stitches and start again so I could continue to practice. Learning to knit in that context helped me use the craft as a way to cope with what was happening. It became my therapy.
HC UPR: ¿Se que tus carteras son tu creación popular. ¿Cómo comenzaste a hacerlas?
I know your biggest selling-point are the bags! How did you start making them?
NS: Antes de aprender a tejer, le había pedido a mi madre que me tejiera una cartera en crochet y me encantó cómo le quedó. Desde ese momento quise aprender a hacerlas para tener más, pero se nos hacía difícil sacar el tiempo para que ella me enseñara y yo aprendiera, hasta que llegó María. Lo más que me gusta tejer son carteras porque desde mi adolescencia he tenido una pequeña obsesión con ellas. Eventualmente, llegó la electricidad y pude comprar hilos y contactar a la maestra que le enseñó a mi madre a tejer para hacer diferentes modelos.
Before learning to knit, I asked my mom to knit me a crochet purse and I loved how it turned out. Since that moment, I wanted to learn how to make them so I could have more. However, it was difficult for us to coordinate to sit down so she could teach me how to knit. Until Maria at least. The thing I like to knit the most is purses because since I was a teenager, I’ve had a small obsession with them. Eventually, the electricity arrived and I could buy yarn and contact my mom’s crochet teacher so I could make different purse models.
HC UPR: ¿Cuánto tiempo te toma hacer una cartera?
How long does it take to make a bag?
NS: Cada cartera es diferente y el tiempo depende muchos variables, como por ejemplo: el modelo de la cartera, si tiene más de un color, flecos, mangos tejidos, si hago errores tengo que romperla hasta llegar al error y arreglarlo, los “breaks” que me tomo para descansar la mano, etc. Sin embargo, diría que en promedio me toma de 2-4 horas sin contar las interrupciones.
Each purse is different and the time depends on a lot of variables, like for example the model, if it’s multicolor, fringes, knitted handles and straps, if i make errors i have to unravel it until I get to the error, the breaks I take to rest my hand, etc. But, on average, I think that it takes me anywhere from 2 to 4 hours.
HC UPR: ¿Cómo es tu proceso de creación? ¿Qué haces para tener un espacio en el que quieras tejer?
What’s your creative process like? What gets you in the mood?
NS: Mi proceso creativo comienza desde la compra de hilos. Al escogerlos, ya me voy imaginando en cuál modelo se vería bien con el color, con cuáles mangos pegaría, con qué colores lo puedo combinar, etc. Así que el proceso es bien intuitivo y nace desde mi imaginación. Lo bueno de tejer es que no te limita tanto el lugar donde lo haces, a diferencia de otros procesos artesanales que requiere de un taller estático para hacer las creaciones. Yo puedo tejer en la playa, mientras veo Netflix (donde más lo hago), en las clases (me ayuda más a prestar atención) y en cualquier otro lugar donde me sienta cómoda.
My creative process starts when I’m picking out the yarn. When choosing them, I’m already imagining in which model it would look good with the color, with which handles it would stick, with what colors I can combine it, etc. So, the process is very intuitive and born from my imagination. The good thing about knitting is that it doesn’t limit you so much where you do it, unlike other craft processes that require a static workshop to make creations. I can knit on the beach, while I watch Netflix (where I do it most), in classes (it helps me to pay more attention) and anywhere else where I feel comfortable.
HC UPR: ¿Qué hace que tus piezas sean únicas?
What makes your pieces unique?
NS: Todas las piezas de Nudo Solar son únicas e irrepetibles, eso las hace más especial. Son únicas porque casi nunca trabajo la misma pieza dos veces, no me gusta tejer lo mismo, además de que conseguir el mismo tono o estampado del hilo una vez se acaba es casi imposible. Sin embargo, puedo trabajar tonos similares.
All Nudo Solar pieces are unique and unrepeatable, that makes them more special. They’re unique because I almost never work the same piece twice, I don’t like to knit the same thing, besides getting the same tone or pattern of the thread once it is finished is almost impossible. However, I can work in similar tones.
HC UPR: ¿Haces diseños personalizados?
Do you make custom designs?
NS: Si! La persona puede escoger el color y el estilo de la pieza que quiera en base a los hilos que tenga disponible hasta el momento. Pero si quiere un color en especifico puedo ordenarlo en la próxima compra de hilos. Me encanta este tipo de colaboración porque surgen nuevas ideas.
Yes! The person can choose the color and style of the piece they want based on the threads I have available. But if they want a specific color, I can order it in the next thread purchase. I love this kind of collaboration because new ideas arise.
HC UPR: ¿Cuándo tu negocio comenzó a coger vuelo?
When did your business start taking of?
NS: Después de haber tejido alrededor de 5 carteras, cree la pagina de Instagram y Facebook. Entonces, varias personas me compraron. Pero el despegue fue a partir de mayo de 2018. Comencé a participar en actividades artesanales y Pop Ups y como me fue bien, decidí dejar mi antiguo trabajo en una tienda para dedicarme a lo que me apasionaba.
After having knitted around 5 purses, I created the Instagram and Facebook page and several people bought me. But the take off was from May 2018. I began to participate in artisanal activities and Pop Ups. Since it went well, I decided to leave my old job in a store to devote myself to what I’m passionate about.
HC UPR: ¿En dónde podemos encontrar tus creaciones?
Where can we find your creations?
NS: Por el momento en las redes sociales Instagram y Facebook, en esa plataforma nos podemos comunicar por mensaje directo. Además, por esos medios anuncio las actividades de las cual estaré participando.
At the moment in the social networks Instagram and Facebook, in that platform we can communicate by direct message and also announce in the activities of which I will be participating.
HC UPR: ¿Cuál es el rango de precios de tus piezas y donde las podemos comprar?
What’s your price range and where can we buy them?
NS: Las carteras comienzan desde 40-70 dólares, pero también hago otros productos como collares, tiestos, llaveros, y macramé para colgar, estos productos son más económicos.
The purses start at 40-70 dollars, but I also make other products such as necklaces, pots, key chains, and macrame to hang, these products are inexpensive.
HC UPR: Is there anything else you’d like to tell our readers? Hay algo adicional que le quieras decir a nuestros lectores?
NS: Durante ese contexto difícil de septiembre de 2017 mi vida cambió por completo. Además de tejer, leí a quien es mi filósofo favorito, Friedrich Nietzsche. Lo que quisiera compartir con ustedes fue una frase que me marcó y que me motivó a arriesgarme y a crear Nudo Solar, “You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star”. Así que cada vez que siento que hay caos o adversidad trato de aprovecharme de esa situación a mi favor, aprender de ella y transformarse. Espero que les motive tanto como a mi.
During that difficult September 2017, my life changed completely because. In addition to knitting, I read Friedrich Nietzsche who is now my favorite philosopher. What I would like to share with you was a phrase that marked me and that motivated me to take a chance and create Solar Knot, “You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star.” So, whenever I feel that there is chaos or adversity I try to take advantage of that situation in my favor, learn from it and transform. I hope it motivates them as much as me.
