Girls Guide to Fantasy Football

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

It’s mid-September with fall right around the corner and you know what that means… the two words that take up more of a guys attention than his own girlfriend…

Fantasy football.

Don’t get me wrong, not every girl needs help in this department, but if you’re anything like me you’re into football for the nachos, buffalo chicken dip, and beer on Sundays. So you’ll basically need a kindergarten level breakdown of how this whole “fantasy” thing works. Who knows you might be able to steal even a few moments of your boyfriends attention.

For starters, Fantasy football is a game played through sports sites such as ESPN where you get together a group of people and form your own league. Once you’ve formed your league, a draft is held. Each individual takes turns picking from the draft list to come up with the best team out of the group. Now instead of assessing how the team performs as a whole you must keep score by how well each individual performs per game.

Now you have two options: pretend to be interested in your boyfriends team and keep track of his points OR ask to join the league.

I perfer the latter of the two.

1.  Pick your team name

If I give you any advice in this world, don’t pick a lame, girly team name. This is your time to connect with your boyfriend and his friends. Use that pretty little brain of yours to make a creative, badass name. If you want to be taken seriously, “Pretty In Pink,” “1 Chick 10 Balls,” and “Tom Brady’s Wife,” aren’t going to get you or your boyfriend anywhere except a one way ticket to Joke City.

2. Pick your players

This is hands down the most important and crucial part of picking a Fantasy Football team. Most guys do an extensive amount of research before they pick their players, but you don’t need to do that. Here’s a little secret, no one unattractive has ever been the MVP of a Super Bowl winning team. Look it up. We all know everybody’s number 1 pick would have to be the flawless Tom Brady, but here are a few other NFL hotties that are worthy of a draft pick; Rob Gronkowski, Eric Decker, Danny Amendola and Reggie Bush.

3. Stay committed

Fantasy Football may seem like it’s all fun and games which it is, but only when taken seriously. If you don’t stay on task watching all the games and keeping up on your players statistics then Fantasy Football is just not for you. Guys treat Fantasy Football as if they are in a life or death situation and don’t really like to mess around, so if you’re not the type to commit that much time to something each week then it’s probably best you be a good sport and let your man do his thing.
