5 Things We Realized We Took For Granted When We Moved Away From Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

  1. Privacy of a single bathroom

You thought sharing a bathroom with your siblings and parents was hard. Try sharing it with a whole floor of girls. (I can’t even begin to think about what it would be like on the boys floor). The showers are something that comes with the whole college experience but it is definitely something I will never fully get used to. The water pressure in the showers suck! I understand that a lot of water is being used from all over the place but a decent water flow would be nice! Any time a toilet is flushed the water gets super hot and there is absolutely no where to go. The only thing you can do is move as close to the wall as possible without touching it. Girls shed, there is no doubt about it, but the hair that is left on the shower walls really gives me the hebejebes. The light is dim, probably to hide all the grime that is left on the shower walls and floors. Thank god for $5 Old Navy flip flops! But fair warning be careful when you are shaving your legs its very hard to see, so make sure to stock up on band-aids, you’ll need them!

2. Home cooked meals

Don’t get me wrong the food at UNH isn’t like your average college food, it’s actually pretty good and some of the stuff that they make is stuff that my parents would make at home. I think it’s more of the routine of a home cooked meal, then the meal itself. Being able to sit down with your family at the end of the day is what I miss the most.

3. Your own bed / own room to yourself

I am in a forced triple like many people in the freshman class and we all know the space is very tight and limited. It actually works out fine and it is rare that we are all in the room at the same time, it’s mostly just to sleep. But living in Williamson, it is very unlikely you get any quiet time to yourself. There is always noise especially when you try to nap. Someone is always yelling out the window or blasting their music loudly. At home my room was a place I could go to get away from all the noise and I could destress. I was able to have privacy and a quiet space that sometimes you just need! But the best thing about living in a built up triple in Williamson is you have two built in friends and there is always something to raise your eyebrows at in Williamson!

4. Seeing your pets anytime you want to

I grew up with having dogs all my life. So  I am used to waking up to them in the morning, so excited to see me, almost like they haven’t seen me in days. When in reality it has only been a few hours!  It is honestly one of the best feelings in the world. I loved it when I would come home from a long day at school and I would lay on the couch and they would curl up in the crook of my leg and fall asleep so peacefully. The thing that I am going to miss the most is when I am sick and they would be right next to me all day to the point where I would get frustrated because they would have me pinned into my bed so that I couldn’t even move my legs. But I know they were just making sure I was okay. Dogs know when something is wrong!! I haven’t gotten sick yet (knock on wood) but i’m dreading the moment when it happens because I won’t have my puppies by my side! Facetime just doesn’t cut it. I miss my dogs!!

5. Girls days out with my Momma

My mom is the hardest worker I know. She juggles so many different jobs and she still makes being a mom look easy. Everyday was a new adventure. It didn’t matter what we did, whether it be for the whole day or just an hour it was always time well spent gossiping about day to day happenings. Running errands on the weekends was our forte but it always seemed to turn into some sort of  shopping trip one way or another. Or the famous grocery trips to Costco! When we were done we had wished we ate before hand because our stomachs did the shopping. She is the one person that I know will always have my back and will forever be my favorite person.
