As a college student, I can say that buying expensive name-brand clothing items is off the table for me when it comes to shopping. I want to look presentable, but save as much money as I can.  Finding alternative options to name-brand stores can be difficult but definitely not impossible.

Here are a few tips on how to ‘ball on a budget’ while in college and find exactly what you’re looking for and save $$$ at the same time:

1. Thrifting

Thrift stores, whether second-hand, consignment, or specialty, usually have a lower price point in clothing than most stores. I love thrift shopping especially because I can find cool vintage pieces that are unique and hold a lot of character. Thrifting is my #1 tip on saving money and an awesome way to keep your personal style intact throughout college and even continuing after. Thrifting can be a fun hobby to do with friends while exploring and supporting local stores around your area. Another tip while thrifting would be to explore every section of the store; I have found the best graphic t-shirts in the men’s section of thrift stores — so don’t be afraid to venture out!

Each piece above was either thrifted from local stores around the Raleigh/Triangle area or hand-me-downed — Every item under $20!

2. Up-cycle/DIY:

I have found myself many times not wanting to spend any money at all when it comes to changing up my wardrobe and that’s perfectly fine, too! In this case, my best tip would be to up-cycle old clothing in your closet. For example, when I get tired of old jeans, I’ll re-purpose them by making shorts. Even finding an oversized T-shirt and tie-dying it can always turn out cool and different each time. In aspect to the newest trend, fraying the bottom cuffs of a pair of jeans can make for a cheaper alternative as opposed to paying full price at a name-brand store. I like to think of DIY clothes as a fun way to spice up old clothing that you don’t wear but aren’t ready to donate quite yet.

3. Free Hand-Me-Downs

Hand-me-downs have always gotten a bad rap, when in reality they can be the best form of gaining new clothing items. Usually hand-me-downs are free if you have a relative who is willing to give up pieces they don’t use anymore. Plus, hand-me-downs always have a cool history behind them! If you find someone who is donating clothes or selling them at a yard sale, don’t be hesitant to take a look because you might find trendy pieces that can be implemented into your wardrobe!

Every time my mom is ready to start donating clothes, I go through them and pick out pieces that I like, which is convenient when I feel the need to try new things within my wardrobe. I found these super cute short-overalls in the pile she was going to give away, and have made them fit into my own style. Not only was it free but it’s something that can hold a little bit of sentimental value.

Finding cheap outlets to buy clothes from can be incredibly beneficial when you’re a college student like me and trying to save money. I personally prefer thrifting over going to the mall because most of the time, I am able to find things I enjoy wearing at a lesser value which is the goal!

Good luck!!
