It’s a funny thing, life is. You know, we are born into this world where we are small and vulnerable and have done nothing except be held by our parents. Since the beginning of time, we are taught how to do things such as walking, going to the bathroom, brushing our teeth and writing a sentence. We grow up in which we learn how to drive, have jobs and eventually move out of our parent’s homes. We all walk around this world as though we know exactly who we are. Yet, we are asked one of the broadest questions ever (well, at least once in our lifetime): Who are you?

As a kid, most of us (when asked) would say something along the lines of, “My name is so and so, and my favorite color is so and so.” It’s unbelievable how we come into this world full of such innocence, hope and imagination. We know who we are to be and what we want to do in the future, yet we reach a certain age and all that confidence slowly goes away.

Normally in grade school and even high school we get asked by a teacher, “What will you be doing five to ten years from now? What is your career going to be? Where do you want to live in the future?” Somehow, we might just… not know. I’ve been asked those questions many times before. It seems as though I struggle to find those perfect words every time I try to answer the questions. It’s as if I have a canvas, yet I can’t think of any ideas – like I’m stuck.

I know the basics of who I am. But, I do not know my purpose. In life, are we ever meant to find that purpose, or is it something that just mainly exists? I don’t understand how someone so small, so positive and so confident tends to grow and at a point in time be someone who is full of worry, inconfidence and stress. Because if throughout our lives we have to search and search for who we are, then why are we asked all the time, “Who are you?”
