How to Lose Your Acne Forever ( 5 Ways Accutane Changed My Life)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Sure, middle school is not an especially flattering stage for any young women, but I can assure you that mine was especially gruesome. I was the first of my friends to develop horrible, ugly red spots all over my face. After endless dermatological visits and one topical cream after another, my fruitless efforts were only rewarded with even more severe acne.  Then my mother and I read into a prescription medicine that not even my doctor had recommended.

Known for giving extreme psychological reactions such as depression and a chemical powerful enough to deform a fetus if there is one living inside of you, Accutane promises to clear up your acne forever. And it does.

If you’re suffering from untreatable acne and debating undergoing the health risks involved, here are 5 reasons Accutane changed my life.

1. Self-Confidence-
Since taking Accutane, I cannot express to you the changes it has made on me socially. I can talk to almost anyone without worrying that they’ll stare at the spots on my face and not my smile.

2. Less Expensive-

It seemed like weekly I was making treks to the drug store to try out this new scrub, or that miracle mask I saw in Teen Vogue. It seemed like I had a whole different face routine for each day and that was not cheap. Now all I need is basic face wash and moisturizer. That’s it.

3. No Makeup-
Oh My God. Do you know how it feels to be able to swipe on mascara and chapstick and just head out? Let me tell you, you feel like Jessica Alba.  And that is a beautiful feeling.

4. It Lasts.
I get one or two pimples with periods still, I’m not a goddess, but fickle breakouts NEVER happen.  The one or two monthly pimple is nothing compared to the dozens that were constantly on my face. I took Accutane seven years ago and this effect has maintained.

5. No More Caution-
When I was prone to acne, I would constantly fear that this slice of pizza or my big test this week would set off another break out. Especially if an event was taking place where my skin HAD to be clear. Not living in fear of breakouts before a big event is so convenient.

If you have enough acne to lower your self-confidence or interfere with how you view yourself, I can 100% recommend Accutane. It’s not easy on your body, and I’m not a doctor. But my personal experience was dramatically life changing. And anyone with acne can vouch for how good it would feel to not be burdened with acne everywhere.
