Useful Study Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

For most people who are in the quarter system, midterm and finals season is right around the corner. A lot of us tend to get stressed out and don’t really know how to handle situations like these. Here are a few study tips that might help you ace your midterms or finals.

1. Quizlet

I’ve probably been using Quizlet since I was in high school and it was one of the best ways to study. There are different options on how to study such as flashcards, writing the definition/word your learning and matching the answers. It helps with different learning types and makes things a lot easier for people. You can use it on either your computer or smartphone device which makes it convenient if you’re on the go.

2. Explain your answer to others

Being able to explain your answer to someone else helps to know that you truly understand the material. Most of the time when you are able to truly explain the answer in your own words, it means that you comprehend the material. Not only would this help you, but if the person you’re studying with is studying the same thing it could allow them to comprehend the material better as well because those facts are being restated to them.

3. Study groups

Working with other people can be very useful when you do not understand the material. They can explain it to you and help you with what you are confused about or haven’t been able to solve. Seeing it from different viewpoints may allow you to understand it.

4. Take breaks

Studying for hours straight may work for some people, but most of the time people need to take breaks so that their brains can relax for a little and actually obtain the information studied. By working for hours straight, you might be learning too much material at the same time and won’t be able to retain any of it for an exam.

5. Note-taking

This is my favorite way of learning. I tend to just take notes or rewrite what I’m learning and it helps me learn it. Not only am I memorizing what I’m learning, but I’m visually seeing what I’m writing down which helps me remember.

Not all of these may work for everyone, but out of all of them, the most helpful would probably be Quizlet. It has different ways that people are able to study which can be beneficial to all learning types. These are probably my favorite and the most useful that I have found out.
