Ottawa Arts Review Presents: the stArt Campaign (and a Scholarship!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Having trouble finding an outlet for your creative work? Losing faith in social media as a platform for your writing? It’s getting harder and harder for artists to find a voice in an age where everyone has the chance to be heard. That’s why the Ottawa Arts Review wants to give young artists an opportunity to get their work published.

Founded in 2006 by creative writing students at the University of Ottawa, the Ottawa Arts Review is a small press that aims to promote written and visual art in Ottawa. Every year, with the help of student and alumni volunteers, the OAR magazine publishes a collection of poetry, prose, and visual art made by students at the university and local, Canadian, and international artists. Their newest issue, Currents, was launched in January and is available for purchase in the UESA office on campus (70 Laurier Ave E, Rm 321).

This April, the Ottawa Arts Review is hosting its first stArt Campaign, a fundraiser to keep OAR alive by bringing awareness to arts on campus and giving back to students. Partnering with uOttawa Quidditch and UNiTY Ottawa, OAR is bringing students a week of arts-themed events. One lucky student will also be awarded a scholarship!

stArt Week runs from Monday, April 1st to Saturday, April 6th, will be hosting events that encourage creativity. There are six event themes: visual art, brainstorming, theatre, poetry & writing, film, and music. The money raised through ticket sales will be put into funding that goes toward our uOttawa Quidditch team AND a scholarship that will be awarded to a deserving student with a passion for the arts. The scholarship application will be released on the OAR website after April 6th, 2019. Those who attend the most events will have higher chances of winning!

At the end of the week, OAR will be partnering with UNiTY Ottawa and Happy Goat to host a night of live performances, featuring local artists maxd, WAVVYFROG, Gold Tongues, and Artin Avaznia. The event will also give attends the chance to meet, connect, and collaborate with other artists in Ottawa.
