Why We Love The University of Delaware’s Yoga Club

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Delaware chapter.

Breathe in, now breathe out. That’s how simple practicing yoga can be. If you’re looking to try something new that will give yourself an hour dedicated to relaxation, then I highly suggest going to Yoga Club here at the University of Delaware. There are endless benefits of practicing yoga and we are lucky enough to have weekly practices held right here in Newark!

Through improving your respiratory health and building strength, yoga can improve your whole life. There are typically nine different evening times held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and the best part is, it’s free of charge! You can pick and choose when you decide to go and there’s even a stress relief event right before finals happening next week! What a perfect time to go, honestly. This will include music, meditation and a vegan meal.

Each session is different and there are a variety of instructors that incorporate their own style into their practices. Poses vary from downward dog, warrior three, boat pose and everything in between. No matter your flexibility or balancing levels, each pose can be modified for your own personal extents. It’s a unique experience because a personal intention is set before each practice. This could include dedicating your practice to a loved one or even hopes of getting through a rough week.

I interviewed one of the many talented instructors that we have here on campus named Makaela Andes, who feels as though yoga is one of the most amazing experiences of her life. She’s been a yogi on and off for the past few years and she finally received an opportunity this past summer to get certified to become an instructor. Her involvement with yoga has allowed her to grow and be her true self. After just trying yoga this past year, I’ve found that anyone can partake in this learning experience and you can build on with each practice that you attend. In my opinion, the best part of each hour is called savasana. You lay on your back with your palms facing upward for complete relaxation and time to reflect on your practice. Next, the instructor ends the hour by stating, “The light in me honors the light in you,” which is the meaning of the word, namaste.
