Tips on Staying Safe During Winter Storm Juno

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Rejoice! The probability of a snow day on the Storrs campus during Winter Storm Juno is pretty likely. Before you celebrate with movies and snacks, here are some tips on how to stay safe during the expected blizzard.

  1. Stay on top of UConn’s alert system. Go to http://alert.uconn.edu/ and if you have not already, sign up for text alerts for delays and closings.
  2. Have a car on campus? Take your shovel out of your car before the snow hits if you are able to, so when the need comes, you’ll be able to shovel it out more easily and more safely.
  3. Consider your safety first. With low visibility out on the roads to be expected and slippery conditions, it may not be possible to safely drive.
  4. Be sure to have a flashlight and the correct batteries in case of a power outage. If your housing allows, candles may also suffice. Be sure not to leave them burning while unattended or overnight.
  5. Understand that UConn is a large campus with a lot of area to uncover once the snow starts to fall. Be careful while walking around to the dining hall or back from classes later today.
  6. Charge your cell phones or other devices now! Use them minimally in case of a power outage so you can contact friends and family if need be.

Be sure to watch out for weather warnings for the next few days and for those on campus, listen to your RA for any special instructions. Stay safe collegiettes and soon you’ll be making snow angels like Amida Brimah during the Final Four!
