Cute & Creative Halloween Costumes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Halloween is right around the corner and many of us are just now realizing it. Luckily there are plenty of costumes you can throw together using basic items found in your closet. This article will help you look fabulous and creative, without breaking any bank!

Where’s Waldo

Where’s Waldo is a classic costume that everyone is bound to get. You can dress it up or dress it down, and make it as sexy or conservative as you like. Pair a white and red striped top with blue bottoms, and brown shoes. Accessorize with glasses and a red hat. This costume is great because it’s easy to do, and can keep you warm on late October nights. [pagebreak]

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

This costume is a classic replica of Audrey Hepburn in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Pair your LBD (little black dress) with a silver or white statement necklace, along with black earrings. Complete with retro cat eye sunglasses, and a silver hairclip. To polish off your look, pin your hair up in a classy up-do, like some of the ones suggested on our Pintrest: http://pinterest.com/pin/219691288042994666/ http://pinterest.com/pin/22658804345610597/. Miss Piggy

This costume comes with a lot of creative licensing. Wear a pink dress, or shirt and skirt, with a pearl necklace. Accessorize with pink or white gloves or with pink or white high socks/tights and heels. Top it off with a feather boa or a scarf, and pig ears! You can make pig ears at home with a simple headband, and a roll of pink duct tape. To do this, cut two pieces of triangular cardboard. Tape these to a headband and then cover the headband and cardboard in your pink duct tape. Complete the look with curly hair and lots of pink makeup. [pagebreak]

Risky Business

You’ll be ready to sing and dance in this costume! Show off your legs in a fun rendition of Tom Cruise in Risky Business. Wear a long sleeve button up, with boyshorts (or spandex shorts), and sunglasses. Complete this look with gym socks, or thigh highs for a cuter look. Be sure to wear shoes of your choice if you plan on going out.  [pagebreak]

School Girl/Librarian/Secretary

This classic outfit is a Halloween favorite. Dress up your button up and blazers with a curve hugging skirt. Keep your buttons undone and show off your favorite bra or bandeau for a sexy look. Pair with glasses and your hair pulled back in a tight bun. Use over the knee socks or tights to keep warm, and wear your favorite pumps or booties. [pagebreak]

Minnie Mouse

Look cute as a button in this Minnie Mouse costume. Dig out your red and white polka dot dresses and shirts to pull this off. Pair with black bottoms or black tights, and white socks tucked into red or black shoes. Accessorize with black earrings and a red bow in your hair. To top this look off make yourself a pair of mouse ears with cardboard and a headband, much like in the Miss Piggy costume. [pagebreak]

Madonna

Throw back to the 80’s with this Like a Virgin Madonna costume. Pull this look off with a black or white skirt, paired with a bandeau or off the shoulder tee. Pair this with black combat boots or booties, and an edgy black leather jacket. Layer on a couple chain or pearl necklaces, keeping in mind the cross and star emblems Madonna was so fond of. Top it off with a smoky eye, a pink pout, and your biggest, teased out hair. Throw in a bow for extra spark, and remember, with this look, the more hairspray the better!

Geisha

Remember Mulan in this Asian inspired costume. There are a few different combinations possible for this look, but keep in mind both florals and sheer. You can achieve this by using a patterned wrap dress, a floral shirt, and pencil skirt, or any combination of dresses and floral or sheer tops. Wear strappy beige or wooden sandals. Pull your hair back into a bun, and accessorize with floral headbands or dangling decorative clips. Accessorize with a fan, which you can easily make by folding paper. Decorate your fan by drawing a pattern or flowers on it before folding. One of the most important components of this look is the makeup. Make sure to keep your face pale, and your lips looking plump and red. Pin Up

Take advantage of the return of high-waisted shorts and skirts with this adorable look. Pair your high waisted bottoms with your favorite bandeau or bralette, or go all denim and top it off with a red bandana for a “Rosie the Riveter” look. To keep warm wear thigh high tights tucked into a pair of your favorite pumps. Complete this look with cat eye shades and red lipstick. To really finish off this pin up look, complete with retro curls and a classic pin up hair style.  Catwoman

With the recent release and popularity of the new Batman movie, this look is bound to be a great hit. Prepare in advance for bad weather (like last year’s snow storm) in this sleek and sexy look. Wear your tight black jeans or leggings, with a sexy tight black top, and a leather jacket. Tuck your bottoms into a pair of kick ass black boots or booties, and rock a dark cat eye. Complete this look with black cat ears, and a mask. The ears, like the Minnie and Miss Piggy costume can be made by cutting out triangular pieces of cardboard and attaching them to a headband, and then covering it with black duct tape, or coloring it in. There are a lot of templates online for the mask, which you can cut out and attach to a headband or ribbon to secure around your head.

One good template I found is here: http://www.wellpromo.com/upload/upimg08/Custom-Imprinted-Cat-Mask-157108…
