Self-Tanning Steps for Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arkansas chapter.

Spring Break is almost here and pale girls everywhere are applying their self-tanners in a hurry to be ready for their high-waisted cutoffs and strapless bikinis. Don’t show up to the beach with tanning product streaks and strips of paleness. And don’t show up pale! Here are some simple rules to remember when it comes to self-tanners!

1. Choose the Right Color- Picking the right shade is crucial for self-tanning products. A lot of people want to choose a shade too dark for their skin, and that’s when they will turn into an orange. Most of these tanning products will come in an array of colors; pick the one closest to your actual skin color and the more you apply it the darker you will get, leaving a more natural effect than just applying a darker color.

2. Exfoliate! Scrubbing down in the shower won’t scrub that fake tan away. Don’t let your self-tanner build up in your pores, this will just make you look dirty. Use your loofa or your salt scrub and allow your pores to be opened up and refreshed. This will allow the color to easily soak into your skin and leave that bronze stain you want.

3. Moisturize- enough said. If you apply your self-tanner at night, then put lotion on in the morning and mid-day. Everyday. Dry skin will not take in your product the way it should and you’ll find yourself wasting your time and money.

4. Use a Mitt– Avoid built-up streaks and missed spots by using a mitt to evenly apply the product. This will also keep your hands from being abnormally tanner than the rest of your body.

5. Lastly, Pick a good Product- Don’t cheap out. There are lots of good self-tanners for reasonable prices. Choose a “Gradual Tan” product so that your skin will, yes, gradually take in the color ad become tanner. This way the product will not fade away in the shower. Some popular gradual tanning products are made by St. Tropez, Neutrogena, and Aveeno.

Follow these easy steps and become a bronzed goddess by spring break!
