Why You Should Check Out Your Local Farmer’s Market

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SPU chapter.

Aside from the flowers and multitude of adorable photo ops, there are plenty of reasons you should definitely head down to your local farmer’s market and see what its all about.

First and foremost, the food at farmer’s markets will always be the freshest and tastiest you can buy. All the fruits and veggies for sale are seasonal, and come directly to the market from the field where they were grown – so much better than being frozen or packed with preservatives! The minimal processing and minimal transportation put into the food at farmer’s markets means it is much better for both you and the environment. You will also be doing good for the local economy, as you are most likely buying directly from local family farmers.

Shopping at your local market will also give you the opportunity to expand your tastes! Vendors and farmers will sell what is at the peak of the season, so there will definitely be all of your favorites, plus a few things you’ve probably never heard of! Most likely the vendor will have a few recipe ideas for you as well.

Knowing where your food comes from should be a high priority, and you have peace of mind knowing your food has come from a local farm when you choose to skip the grocery store. It might also be cheaper! Most food you will find at the farmer’s market will be organic and non-GMO, and the prices will most likely be comparable if not less expensive than organic produce from grocery stores.

If this hasn’t convinced you, head down to the nearest market the next time its open and see what its all about!
