Ten Popular Culture Villains Less Scary Than Donald Trump

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sonoma chapter.

Even prior to winning the presidential election last November and taking office in January, Donald Trump had garnered many comparisons to deceptively pink and innocent-looking evil mastermind Professor Dolores Umbridge from the Harry Potter series. Here are some other popular culture villains who are less scary than Donald Trump. Note: I’ve left out horror movie characters, considering that the Trump administration practically is a horror movie, and villains from superhero movies, because that’s just too easy.

10. Meredith Blake

No one liked her. No one even pretended to like her. Even people who have never seen The Parent Trap know that they don’t like her. She was mean, and selfish, and only using the twins’ dad for his money, and everyone knew it except for him. Now, I’m not trying to defend her or anything, because that would violate the 90s kid rules, but as awful as Meredith was, she seemed more self-centered than actually evil. And she wasn’t stumbling through a massively important job she had no clue how to do. Just saying.

9. Plankton

In the now decades-old battle over an animated hamburger between an animated crab and an animated plankton (why were all of us watching this nonsense cartoon?) the villain is always foiled, usually because he’s small and shortsighted. So, even though he’s technically a villain, he isn’t really scary, because everyone watching knows that his plans will fail, and he will inevitably end up back where he started. Donald Trump, however, can order the use of nuclear weapons. Which means if his plans fail, the world could end. That’s scary.

8. Literally anyone from Scooby Doo

If you were watching Scooby Doo, you knew that the bad guy was going to get caught. You also knew that it wasn’t really a ghost, or werewolf, or zombie, or vampire causing mayhem in the creepy place that the gang just so happened to be driving through. As in, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. In the White House, we do have to worry about senior advisor Steve Bannon becoming the man behind the curtain.

7. Hades

As funny as this guy is, it can be easy to forget that he’s the king of the underworld and trying to kill Hercules. Even his flares of temper (literally, because when he’s angry the flames that represent his hair flare up) are amusing. Trump’s flares of temper are not nearly as amusing, and potentially more dangerous.

6. Snow White’s wicked stepmother

Isn’t wanting to have the princess killed because she’s prettier than you a more extreme version of firing the acting Attorney General just because she didn’t agree with you even though you’re wrong and your executive order is unconstitutional? Trump’s vanity and arrogance matches the evil queen’s, and he seems willing to fire people who don’t agree with him that “he alone can solve the country’s problems” and whatever other “alternate facts” he believes.

5. The Grinch

He literally tried to steal Christmas, and he seriously mistreated his dog while doing it. He’s green and really creepy looking, and I for one, still cannot watch this movie because he gives me the creeps. Sort of like how Donald Trump is orange and really creepy looking and gives me the creeps.

4. Him

Because an evil, terrifying lobster, devil thing wasn’t terrifying enough for a children’s cartoon, the creators of The Powerpuff Girls had to make this villain an evil, terrifying, cross-dressing lobster, devil thing. He’s definitely the scariest villain on this show. Donald Trump is the scariest president in American history. So they have that in common.

3. Scar

Who is so full of envy, hate, and rage that they literally kill their own brother? An evil animated lion, that’s who. Being an animated lion though, Scar doesn’t have the same logic and critical thinking skills that a human does. He would rely more on animal instinct. The full extent of Trump’s critical thinking skills has yet to be seen.

2. Maleficent

Maleficent literally ruined a girl’s life because she didn’t get invited to a party. This makes her the scariest of the Disney villains because she has no traumatic backstory (that we see), she isn’t seeking revenge for some great injustice; she’s just evil and petty. She’s also really smart and doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Can anyone else see Donald Trump taking disproportionate action in response to some perceived insult?

1. -A

-A, A.D., Uber A, A-moji, it doesn’t matter what you call this mysterious, evil force who gets a new identity every few seasons, they’re always terrifying. The fact that no one knows who A is makes this enemy even more scary, because they could be a friend, or a classmate, or someone who you see every day but would never suspect. Will we see Trump’s true colors before A’s identity is finally revealed in the finale of Pretty Little Liars? Who knows. Yet, even with the seemingly unlimited supply of money and minions willing to follow their every order, A isn’t as scary as Trump, because A only has a vendetta against five girls, whereas Trump lists “the media” and everyone who didn’t vote for him as enemies.
