If you religiously read the Cosmo story on Snapchat like I do, then there is a possibility you read the story about the insane hazing at Hofstra University. The fraternity responsible, Sigma Pi, recently had their chapter revoked because of the leaked videos and pictures of the initiated members hazing their pledges.

Former pledge member, Syed Ali John Mehdi, notified the Grand Council about the hazing rituals that were being performed during the rushing process. Once again…WARNING! A few of the hazing rituals involved being completely covered in ghost pepper hot sauce (which is one of the hottest hot sauces in the world) from head to toe, including their genitals. Pledges were forced to drink gallons of milk, and then forced to throw up on each other’s head, back, and face. In the video you can hear someone — most likely an initiated member– say, “C’MON BOYS! THIS IS HOW WE DO IT!” There are also photos of pledges laying on the floor covered in a white powder. Some sources say it’s flour, but to be completely honest after reading all the other rituals I would not be surprised if it wasn’t flour. The pledge who was physically the smallest was thrown into a cage and kept there for an ‘indefinite amount of time’. According to Mehdi, the pledge’s time in the cage would increase if they incorrectly answered a question about one of their brothers or about the fraternity itself. There were also text messages saying things like, “Just make sure my stuff on the wash is folded neatly on my bed, and my bed is made. Person will get 10 merits.” and “Get this shit off my lawn by 12:30 or your night will be the worst of your insignificant lives. —– I don’t care who does it. Just take care of it before 5 or God help all of you tonight.”

When I first heard about this incident, I was completely shocked and sick to my stomach. Watching the videos and looking at the pictures that were leaked were so surreal to me. But it also made me wonder, why would these pledges allow themselves to be dehumanized just to be part of a brotherhood? Don’t get me wrong, I was more than shocked when I first started researching this incident because of what these initiated members were capable of, but at the same time, did these pledges not get the chance to just walk away and maybe that’s why they endured through the insane, disgusting, hazing rituals? It also makes me wonder, why would these group of pledges would want to be part of a ‘brotherhood’ that is willing to abuse of them? One can only wonder.
