One thing you can always guarantee about time and fashion is that they are always moving forward. The clock is always ticking, the clothing racks are always changing, and fashion counissors are always looking for something never worn before. With that being said, we cannot fashion forward in 2022 without taking a moment to reflect on some of the fashion trends of 2021. Come along with me as I review some of the biggest fashion trends of 2021!
- Sweater vests
First up are sweater vests! At first I wasn’t sure what to think of this trend, but after purchasing a sweater vest of my own, I immediately understood the hype around this trend. Sweater vets are perfect since they can easily be thrown on with jeans, leggings, skirts, or pretty much any bottoms! In addition to this, they are super warm, especially when they are placed over a comfy long-sleeve turtleneck. They also scream 70s style fashion, which is something I really appreciate about sweater vests since I love how trends always come back around.
- Wide legged pants : denim and lounge
I was in utter shock when I first saw someone walking in a wide legged lounge wearing parents. I immediately was taken all the way back to middle school when I would wear wide legged “yoga pants” to school in the 4th grade with a tie dye long sleeve on top. With that being said, I was a little shocked to see someone wearing these in 2021. To my understanding, I came to realize that I was in fact behind the trend, and that wide legged lounge pants were making a comeback. A few months later I came to appreciate this trend, especially when I don’t feel like putting on jeans on a lazy day!
- Matching workout sets
Although workout sets have been around for quite some time now, I feel as though now more than ever brands have their own line of workout sets. Whether it’s Lululemon, Athleta, Gymshark, Fabletics, Alo Yoga; Workout sets are everywhere and are even seen to be worn outside of the gym! I love this trend and hope it never goes away, although, I don’t think it ever will since it gives everyone an excuse to run errands all day in their favorite comfy leggings.
Life is more fun when you live in color! Although my closet is mostly composed of black clothing, I can certainly say that after 2021 I have added more color to it. In the past year more than ever I have seen fashion influencers and individuals around me experiment with brights whether they wear a bright pink sweater, have brightly colored polished nails, or even some fun colored high top sneakers; brights have certainly left an impact on all of our closets in 2021!
- Terricloth everything
Especially in the warmer months, I have certainly noticed the material of terricloth popping up in all different types of clothing. I have seen brightly colored terry cloth shorts and rompers all throughout the shops, being worn on the beach, and on fashion influencers instagram posts this past summer. Nothing truly beats early 2000s Britney Spears in a terry cloth sweat suit, so I am so happy to have this comfortable material back and trending!
- Country boots
Although I am not sure how country boots came to be such a staple in everyone’s closet, they certainly did make a big appearance in 2021. Believe it or not, both country boots and country hats made it to the Met Gala 2021 red carpet looks. My favorite way I’ve seen country boots is paired with a nice flowy dress. I think that these boots accent everybody’s legs, and make them look even longer when you wear them with a dress!
- Prints on prints on prints
Last, but certainly not least, was the trend of prints this past year! Zebra printed tops, cheetah loafers, floral summer tops, marble printed wide legged jeans; There were too many to keep track of! However, I think they each added something fun to each of the outfits of the seasons they were in! I am always a supporter of avoiding basic clothes and throwing in some prints or color.
That wraps up my review of the most iconic fashion trends of 2021. Make sure to make room in your closets for some even more iconic fashion trends in 2022, it’s now time to fashion forward with the new year!
