The fall semester is wrapping up and winter break is upon us. I’m sure some of you will be bored out of your minds, so I’m going to give you ideas on how to spend this winter season over the break.

1. Read

This is a great time for you sit back, relax and read a book or two. Reading is very important and it’s a form of leisure. Some of us dread reading especially since most of our classes require us to read a lot, but you’re more likely to enjoy reading if it’s pleasurable.

I will be reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn with my spare time. If you’re looking for a few recommendations on what books to read check out Jesse Smith’s article on 5 Books Everyone Should Read.

2. Ice Skating

One of the most popular activities in Sacramento during the winter season is ice skating. We’re really fortunate to have an ice rink both in Downtown Sacramento and Roseville. I’m honestly looking forward for ice skating, so I can cross it off of my bucket list!

There are a variety of events at the Downtown ice rink such as: Chanukah, Drags Queen On Ice and so much more. Definitely check it out, but hurry because it’s only open until late January.

3. Plan Ahead for the Upcoming Semester

Yes, I know it’s the break, but hear me out first. I’m going to use my break wisely and prepare for spring classes so I have a head start. If you’re taking some tough classes, prepare ahead of time. Start early so you don’t fall behind during the spring semester.

Personally, I will read the new course materials to give myself time to prepare and buying my textbooks early. Planning ahead helps with stress and you’re going to be a lot more relieved once spring semester draws nearer.

4. Volunteer

I love volunteering because it helps out the community and it’s really fun. This winter, you can do the same! If you are wondering “How can I find volunteer options?”, I got you covered. Volunteermatch will help you find local volunteer options. I’m interested in medicine, so I will be volunteering at a local hospital.

Some great volunteer options would be Kaiser, Dignity Health, Sutter or Make A Wish Foundation. You can also develop passions through volunteering and discover an interest you didn’t know you had.

5. Sleep

This is the time for you to catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. Humans should get approximately 8 hours of sleep every night.

Not getting enough sleep will hinder your daily functions negatively. You will have less energy and you may get irritable. With enough sleep, retaining information will be easier as well.

To learn more about the effects of sleep, please check out Jasmine Duong‘s article. You will find it to be really informative!

This break will give you a chance to have a fresh start for the next year and the next school semester. Take the time to take care about yourself, whether it’s sleeping the days away or reading a new thriller novel. Maybe even find some new passions through volunteering.

Have fun and get out of your comfort zone!
