With Toronto in yet another lockdown, it’s important to support our community. One of life’s simple pleasures is finding a new favourite restaurant or bakery, so here are five to add to your list.

Nani’s Gelato: 6 Charles Street East

Nani’s Gelato is located right in the centre of downtown Toronto offering fresh scoops, milkshakes, and even delivery pints. Inspired by Asian and Indian tastes, the shop has a rotation of flavours like Punjabi Milk Cake, Thai Green Tea and seasonal flavours like Easter Egg Cookies & Cream. They even offer vegan flavours like Chocolate Banana. Check out their Instagram for updates on their weekly flavours and delivery dates!

Purplerice: Online

Purplerice is a free delivery online pop-up canteen that started during the pandemic and offers meal boxes that can feed one, two or a family of four. Each box comes with a base starch, like rice, and comes with five side dishes. You’ll be able to try food from a different corner of the globe each week, featuring a meat or vegan box and an add-on dessert menu! Some of their past varieties have included food from Thailand, The Philippines, and Morocco. The menus change each week and updates are available on their Instagram

Maizal Tortilleria: 110 Ossington Avenue

Offering fresh tortillas, tamales, salsas and four different taco fillings, Maizal Tortilleria has all the ingredients you need to create the ideal dinner spread. They operate as a zero food waste restaurant and use nixtamalization for their corn. Made fresh every day and available for pick up or delivery, you can even splurge on some Mezcal Agua Santa and make cocktails to pair! Be sure to check them out on Instagram for all their farming and menu updates.

Island Foods: 1310 Don Mills Road

Island Foods is a family-run Caribbean restaurant in North York and the place to be. Their rotis will have you stuffed and with tons of filling options and their homemade hot sauce, you can also grab a Malta or a Ting to wrap up the whole meal. Offering take-out and delivery, there are no excuses! Check it out today!

Butter Baker: 120 Dundas Street West

The lightest, softest, most luxurious baked goods in the city – Butter Baker’s got you. They even have a location in Markham for those outside Toronto! Utilizing French confectionery techniques, they offer an array of desserts and pastries including strawberry matcha danishes, brioche, pink velvet cake and of course, macarons. Seasonally, they also offer Madagascan vanilla gelato which can be mixed with their flavour of the month. For April, they’re offering guava sorbet – it’s a must-have.
