How to Survive Family Events When You Hate Your Family

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Toronto MU chapter.

Family events can be exhausting, but when you don’t get along with your family, you can find yourself in a state of burnout before the food is even served. In order to make the holiday season, “the most wonderful time of the year,” I have a few tips to help you survive that awkward holiday gathering.

Prepare yourself

Before the event, prepare yourself for the expected, even if it hurts your feelings or makes you angry. That’s not to say for you to expect the worst, as you might place yourself in a bad mindset, but try to have an escape plan to prepare yourself!

Smile, nod, and ignore

A little thing I’ve developed over the years. As much as I want to talk back when someone makes a sexist remark or picks my life apart, I have realized that it’s hard to convince people who simply don’t want to listen. Sometimes it would be easier talking to a wall. Just smile, nod, and ignore, but don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself when you need to.

Focus on the positive

Whether it’s a good meal, the family pet, or getting to see your favourite cousin, focus on the positive. This can make you feel thankful for what you have, and can help in changing your attitude so you are able to enjoy the event a little more!

Distract and distance yourself

Distract yourself at events. Bring your phone, a friend you like, or try to have conversations with people that you want to have.

Another big lesson I have learned is that just because they’re family, doesn’t mean you have to act like it. If a family member makes you uncomfortable, distance yourself from them.

You can’t change who your family are and how they act. So my last and final reminder is to always place yourself and your mental health first. Good luck!
