5 Things To Do to Relax and Reset Over Reading Week

Mid-February is a busy time for university students everywhere. Although it feels like the semester just began, the reality of assignments, essays and midterms proves otherwise. 

But that’s where reading week comes in. Five full days (and two weekends) to just relax. Sure, reading week can be a great time to catch up on class readings and assignments, but it can also be an even better time to reset. Below are five activities you should do during reading week to relax and recharge.

1. Bake your favourite dessert

Baking can be a great way to release tension or stress while having fun at the same time. It’s a hands-on activity that forces you to be in the present moment, which can be comforting and relaxing. One of my favourite things to bake is focaccia bread by British baker Paul Hollywood. There is nothing more satisfying than warm bread straight out of the oven. Plus, serving homemade food to those you love is sure to put a smile on their faces‒‒and yours as well. 

2. Go for a long walk outside

During reading week, challenge yourself to go for a walk every day. Call up your friends, and head to a local coffee shop or walk in an area that you have never been to. Walking is a great way to get some exercise and clear your mind from all your schoolwork. Being outside in nature and breathing in the cool, crisp air will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to finish the semester strong. 

3. Go out for afternoon tea

Almost every March break in high school, I would go out for afternoon tea with my mom. It was such a relaxing and comforting experience, and something I always looked forward to. I recommend trying afternoon tea at Old Mill for the ultimate experience. They have a variety of teas to choose from, and even more food, including sandwiches, petit fours and scones. Although it can be pricey, afternoon tea is a really nice way to treat yourself!

4. Read, but for your own enjoyment

Sometimes, reading for school isn’t all that fun – but reading a book you actually enjoy is. So, spend reading week finishing your favourite novel or starting a new one. Reading is not only relaxing, but also a great way to escape this busy world and enter another. If you’re looking for a good mystery/psychological thriller book, I recommend The Disappearing Act by Catherine Steadman. It’s about an actress named Mia who realizes she was the last person to see Emily, a fellow actress, before she disappeared. The story unfolds and ultimately answers the question of how far one would go to make the unreal real. 

5. Rest and relax

If you only do one thing from this list, let it be this one. University is stressful, with lots of assignments, Zoom calls and late nights. So, use the reading week to catch up on your sleep. Take the time to de-stress and rejuvenate, whether that means doing a self-care night or watching a movie. By using reading week to rest and relax, you will feel refreshed both mentally and physically.
